PLNU STUDENT-ATHLETE ALUMNI UPDATE 8-19-2019

As the student-athletes make their way back to the Point Loma campus for the upcoming 2019-20 season, the PLNU Athletic Department wanted to take a look at a few Point Loma alumni that have continued their athletic careers beyond college, and are either still playing or coaching. 14992Tyler Flores: baseball, 2017-18
Tyler Flores has been playing the past two seasons in the San Francisco Giants minor league system. After setting the PLNU record for home runs in a season, Flores signed a free agent deal with the Giants in the summer of 2018. He hit .296 with a .392 on-base percentage over 45 games for the Giants' Arizona League team. He began the 2019 season in short-season Single-A ball with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.  Over 27 games he hit .276 with seven home runs and 22 RBI to go along with a .533 slugging percentage to earn a promotion to Augusta (Single-A). Roya player of the MonthRoya Rustamzada: women's basketball, 2014-18
Since graduating from Point Loma after the 2017-18 season, Rustamzada has been playing basketball for the Oaklands Wolves in the Women's British Basketball League. Rustamzada signed a deal with Oaklands in August of 2018 after completing her Sea Lions' career in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks. Last year in 22 regular-season games for the Wolves, Rustamzada averaged 14.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game. She finished in the top 10 in the league in both rebounds and steals. She was named the Molten WBBL Player of the Month in March after averaging 20 points and 10.2 rebounds during the month. 14994Josh Rodriguez: men's basketball, 2014-19
The PacWest's all-time assist leader recently signed a deal to continue his career with Basquet Atlético Club San Martín in La Liga Argentina. Rodriguez will join the team when they begin their season again in October. The four-year starter was one of the greatest players in modern history for the Sea Lions. He left PLNU ranked in the top 10 in points, 3-pointers, and assists. He also set the school-record with 185 career steals. Click here to learn more about Rodriguez's team Club San Martín. 
 
14995Preston Beverly: men's basketball, 2017-19
Beverly will be heading to Europe, and specifically Luxembourg to continue his career on the hardwood. The 6-7 power forward signed a deal to play with the BC Musel Pikes for the upcoming 2019-20 season. This two-time All-PacWest selection and GNAC Freshman of the Year is currently projected as a starter. The season will begin for the Musel Pikes in late September. 15005Hayden Lescault: men's basketball, 2010-15
2018-19 marked the fifth season which Hayden Lescault has been playing in Europe since graduating for PLNU. Last season he played for the Unger Steel Gunners in Oberwart, Austria. Lescault was named the Admiral Basketball Bundesliga MVP after scoring with 17.4 points per game while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game. His team went 31-13 and reached the semifinals of the Österreichische Basketball Bundesliga. 14996Crissa Jackson: women's basketball, 2010-12
The former Sea Lion standout played over three full seasons with the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters. She joined the team in October 2015 after being discovered at a basketball camp by Handles Franklin. Since that time, she has toured the world with the Globetrotters, including the European Tour, which included 77 shows, spanning 73 cities in 13 countries. Jackson was just the 13th female member to join the historic team. In 2017 she was featured in an issue of Rolling Stone. To see the Rolling Stones article, click here.

KlassenMarek Klassen: men's basketball, 2010-15
Klassen has been a well-traveled man since completing his eligibility with the Sea Lions. After spending time in Istanbul, England, and Turkey, Klassen was drafted by the Fraser Valley Bandits in the inaugural Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Draft in late March. Klassen went to the Bandits in the second round of the regional portion of the draft, and he joined Joel Friesen, who went No. 1 overall. In the league's first season, Klassen is pacing the CEBL in assists (7.3) and would rank second in 3-point percentage (.423) with a few more attempts. He is leading the team in points (14.5 ppg) and steals (1.2 spg) while shooting .437 percent from the field. The six CEBL teams will play a 20-game regular season from May 9 to August 15, culminating with a league championship playoff. Fraser Valley is currently 4-15 with one regular-season game remaining. 14998Sam Cyr: men's golf, 2006-09
After playing consistently on the Asian Tour following his time at Point Loma, Sam Cyr played in just one event in 2018 (BNI Indonesian Masters) and has not appeared on the tour in 2019. Over his seven years as a professional on the Asian Tour, Cyr played in 93 tournaments. He posted his best career finish at the Mercuries Taiwan Open, placing second. Cyr has overcome many difficulties, including battling injuries during his career, but his faith in the Lord has allowed him to persevere. 15004Andrew Lasker: men's basketball, 2002-04
Lasker is in his seventh season with the Newcastle Eagles in the British Basketball League. The 2004 graduate of Point Loma is still playing at age 36. In 29 games during the 2018-19 campaign, Lasker averaged 5.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.9 steals per game. The Eagles finished third in the standings at with a 21-12 and paced the league with 88.8 ppg. During his professional career, Lasker played with the Plymouth Raiders and Surrey United before settling in with Newcastle. Lasker was also inducted to the PLNU Hall of Fame in November 2019. 15001Tyler Garkow: baseball, 2012-13
After being named the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs Pitcher of the Year in 2017, Tyler Garkow has continued his baseball career by pitching for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the north division of the American Association. He is 2-0 with a 4.31 earned run average and 42 strikeouts over 39.1 innings. He has allowed just 34 hits and has a 1.24 WHIP. In his post-collegiate career, Garkow is 21-15 with a 3.95 ERA. 15008Colleen Planeta: women's basketball, 2006-10
Planeta added another chapter to the story of her basketball career when she signed with the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames of the WNBL in Australia at the end of June. Planeta spent the previous three season with the MAC Adelaide Lightning, which culminated in a grand final berth this year. She also played in Australia with the Hume City Broncos in Big V, where she won the competition's MVP award twice, and professionally across Europe (Portugal, Greece, Luxembourg, and Germany). 15000Ryan Garcia: baseball, 2014-17
Garcia was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 32nd round of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft. After leading the AZL in RBI in his first season, Garcia was promoted to the Everett AquaSox in short-season Single-A in 2018. He hit .218 with five home runs, 24 RBI and 26 runs scored in 56 games. Garcia decided not to continue his career with the Mariners before the 2019 season. 15002Jay Johnson: baseball, 1998-01
Johnson wrapped up his fourth season as the head coach of the Arizona Wildcats with one of the highest-scoring offenses in the nation, a fourth-straight winning season, and a winning conference record. The club finished the year on a 10-game win streak and came away victorious in 13 of their last 14 games. Johnson is now 153-91 during his tenure with the Wildcats. 15003Carlotta Kloppenburg: women's basketball, 2012-14
Kloppenburg continues to move up the coaching ranks. Last season she was an assistant coach with San Jose State. She served in the role of coaching the team's defensive schemes, post, and center development as well as opponent scouting.  Off the court, she leads the daily operations of and continued effort to expand the Women of Excellence Program and will be the recruiting coordinator for the 2020 class. WalkerKellen Walker: baseball, 2005-06
Walker is entering his ninth year as the head coach of the Western Oregon baseball team. He has posted a 212-137 record over eight seasons. Walker has led WOU to three regular-season GNAC championships and four GNAC Tournament crowns. To read Walker's bio, click here.
 
15006Xavier Lopez: men's basketball, 2005-07
The upcoming 2019-20 season will mark the third for Lopez as a member of the Oregon Ducks women's basketball coaching staff. Lopez helped guide the Ducks to a second straight Pac-12 regular-season championship and the program's first-ever Final Four appearance in 2018-19. Oregon's guards were one of the top shooting groups in the nation. UO led the NCAA in three-point shooting in 2018-19, hitting 41.5 percent from deep as a team. Click here to see Lopez's full bio.
 
15007Mike Eshragh: baseball, 2003-04
Another Sea Lion that has moved into the collegiate coaching ranks, Mike Eshragh just completed his fifth season as an assistant coach with the College of Southern Nevada baseball team. Eshragh specializes in working with infielders. During his tenure with CSN, two Coyote infielders have been drafted, and the team has led the SWAC in fielding percentage. 14999BJ Foster: men's basketball, 1998-01
Foster just completed his third season as the head coach of Cal State San Marcos. Foster has gone 47-38 in his three years at the helm of the Cougars. To learn more about BJ Foster and his coaching career, click here.
