SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Point Loma track & field team opened the 2020 season in a unique way as it competed in a variety of events usually designed for indoor track & field on Saturday at the San Marcos Mangrum Preview.
Â
The Sea Lions took the changes in stride, and many excelled in events they had never run at the collegiate level.
Â
Rahel Rudel took second place in the 200m with a time of 26.27. She also placed sixth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.96.
Avery Avina finished fourth in the 300m with a time of 42.06, and
Teresa Roessler finished eighth (42.71).
Amanda Herrington took fifth place at the meet in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.50.
Â
Competing in more of a familiar event,
Starr Rodenhurst won the javelin with a throw of 135-5 (41.27m). That mark was just a foot off from her career-best, and it was just the first meet of the season for the senior.
Â
Lauren Foster nearly gave the Sea Lions another win in a field event. She placed second in the high jump after clearing 5-1 (1.55m).

As a team, PLNU placed fifth at the meet. To see the complete results, click here.

Words from coach Shane Peterson
On the meet: "I really liked the way our sprinters and hurdlers looked today. They had a 300m and a 600m, which kind of threw us off a little because we didn't know our exact strategy for this race, but I feel like they took the challenge and did amazing with it."
Â
On the opportunity to compete in a meet: "I kept telling the women to treat this like a high-intensity practice. Just have some fun and feel what it's like to compete with women other than your teammates."
Â
On lessons for Rossi: "Just to learn what it is like to compete with all eyes on you. The feel of competition is really going to help them as we build in our season. Our takeaway is, let's learn how to compete because it is not just practice anymore, we are now practicing to compete."
Â
Next meet
The Sea Lions will continue their season on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Rossi Relays.
