AZUSA, Calif. - The Point Loma track & field team returned to competition after over a year of hiatus due to COVID-19, and it saw multiple women add their name to the school's all-time top 10 list in the Battle for SoCal meet, hosted by Azusa Pacific.
Thrower
Anessa Chirgwin placed her name on two all-time top 10 lists in her first meet as a Sea Lion. The thrower from Oregon City, Ore., registered a mark of 137-0 (41.77m) in the discus on her final attempt of the evening to move into sixth on the PLNU top 10 list. That mark earned her second place at the event and moved her to third on the 2021 PacWest performance list. She was not done there, however. She would also add her name to the top 10 list in the hammer with a throw of 130-1 (39.66m) and move into 10th in the school record books.
Rahel Rudel climbed the ladder in the 100m career-best time of 12.25. The sprinter from Bremen, Germany took .15 seconds off her previous PR in the race to move up one spot in the school record books. Her time also earned her second place in the meet. She would also earn a second-place finish at the meet in the 200m with a time of 25.45.
Aubrey Nex placed third in the 1500m in her first collegiate meet. The Temecula native posted a time of 4:40.78 to place third in the event at the meet.
Madelynn Worley also took home a third-place finish from the Battle of SoCal with an impressive time of 58.85 in the 400m.
Brianna Camarena just missed putting her name on the top 10 list in the pole vault. The freshman cleared 10-11 (3.33m) in her first collegiate meet. She finished fourth overall.
Avery Avina registered a time of 1:05.16 in the 400m hurdles to take fifth in the event and move to fifth on the 2021 PacWest performance list.
The 4x100m relay team also had a strong showing out the gate.
Blanca Granados, Rudel, Avina, and
Amanda Herrington came in with a time of 48.37, which is nearly a full second better than the opening meets in the past few years for the Sea Lions.
Words from coach Jerry Arvin
On competing in their first meet in over a year: "Almost all of our freshmen did not get a senior season last year in high school and we didn't get a season last year so hardly any of these women have competed in over a year. Getting the feel of it out of the box the first time was going to be tough. I think it was really good for the women to see what their work has done for them.
More on the meet: "I don't think many were disappointed with their performances, they were just ecstatic to get out and perform. I was proud that their effort levels were high and they didn't just show up, put on the uniform, and act like they were at a meet. They all competed well and they got to see how much harder they have to work because everyone is so good. It was a great takeaway for us."
On his team: "I was impressed today. I know when you look at the final scores you think 'how could he be impressed?' but many of the other teams have been competing already and this was the first college meet for about a third of our team. I was pleased with what we did."
On the competition: "I was our women but I was also impressed with how good Azusa, Biola, and Concordia were too. I also know that Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific are very good so we have a lot of work to do before the PacWest Championships."
On lessons learned from this meet: "We have to learn to maximize the talent of our team. Our women are all going to get better. Many of them are young, and everyone showed how talented they are today."
