FRESNO, Calif. -
Anessa Chirgwin shattered her own school record and earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the discus to highlight the Point Loma track & field team's performances on the final day of the PacWest Championships. (May 1)
Â
Chirgwin registered a throw of 151-11 (46.31m) on her first attempt of the day. That mark would earn her second place at the meet and eight team points for the Sea Lions. It was over four feet further than her previous record-breaking throw which she posted in the last meet. Her eight points from the discus throw, along with her three from the hammer, made the freshman from Oregon City, Ore., the Sea Lions' top scorer at the meet.
Â
Blanca Granados had an outstanding weekend in the sprints as she earned a pair of places on the Sea Lions' all-time top 10 lists. She ran a time of 12.37 during the 100m prelims to move up to sixth place. She then ran a time of 25.27 to claim the eighth spot in the school record book in the 200m. Â
Â
Avery Avina added five more points to the Sea Lions' total with a fourth-place finish in the 400m hurdles. She earned the No. 4 seed in the finals after posting a career-best time in the prelims on Friday. The senior then held to her seed by running a time of 1:04.51.
Â
Aubrie Nex took fifth place in the 1500m in her first time competing in a PacWest Championship. The freshman from Temecula, Calif., took over six seconds off her prelim time and registered a time of 4:49.73 in the finals.

Madelynn Worley in the 400m (seventh, 57.87),
Rahel Rudel in the 100m (eighth, 12.38), and
Kenna True in the 800m (eighth, 2:24.09).

Eva Koutelieris then set a PR as she went over the bar at 11-1.75 (3.40m) to move into a tie for eighth on the school's all-time top 10 list.
Â
Azusa Pacific won both the men's and women's team championships. These were the fifth straight conference titles for both programs.

Words from coach Jerry Arvin
On Chirgwin's performance: "She had six very consistent throws that were all within two meters of each other. She just had a very good day is the disc. It was big by a freshman and only got beat by a girl from APU that is ranked in the top 5 in the country. She has made steady progress throughout the year and we were really pleased with her. However, I feel she still left some on the table and still has the potential to throw even further. I'm thrilled with Anessa."
Â
On the team: "I was really pleased with all of our women. I know it will be hard for some people to look at the results and say 'you only scored 40-something points so how could you be happy?' Well, I didn't know what we'd be getting going against three top 25 teams, and two others that are in the top 50. For a six-team conference, there is some great competition on the track. We stole a lot of points in many events by scoring in events that we were not supposed to. I think the women did a really good job and many finished ahead of where they should have been."
Â
On the freshmen: "Our freshmen did very well. They performed all weekend against some very tough competition."
Â
On the pole vaulters: "All three are freshmen and they all vaulted really well. They have been making steady improvement all year and I am very happy with their performances. There is still more for them and the future looks bright with three freshmen."
Â
On Avery Avina's career and performance: "She had a great meet and performed well in the prelims of the 100m. She then came back to PR in the 400m hurdles to get in that qualifying spot. IN her race today, she came back after a slow start and just blew other women away late. It has been a great four or five years with Avery and it was wonderful to see her believing in herself."
Â
On the meet: "It was a tough day for many of the women. Not many had competed in these type of conditions."
