AUSTIN, Texas – Two Point Loma baseball players were named to the Academic All-America Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for NCAA Division II with Jack Gonzalez being a first-team selection, while
Baxter Halligan was named to the second team.
Gonzales is one of two pitchers named to the first team after recording a 3.97 GPA in graduate school, where he is studying Sport Management. Gonzales recorded a 10-2 record this year with 107 strikeouts, which puts him in the top-10 in PacWest history for both single-season strikeouts and wins. He finished the season with a 3.48 ERA and recorded two wins in the postseason along with a win over Fresno Pacific to help clinch the 2022 PacWest title.
During his senior year of school, Halligan tallied 3.70 GPA in applied health science to earn second-team recognition. He set a PacWest record with 14 wins this season, recording a 2.07 ERA with a record 120 strikeouts in 100 innings. He had seven wins in his last eight starts and a no-decision in an 8-7 win over Azusa Pacific, in which he gave up just one hit in seven innings. Through the first two months of the season, he had a sub-1.00 ERA, while also tearing things up at the plate with a .514 batting average, during Point Loma's 10-game winning streak. He also had seven multi-hit games in the postseason.
Gonzales and Halligan were the only two players from the NCAA West Region to be named to the Academic All-American team.
