(SAN DIEGO) Twenty teams and over 700 entries descended upon the PLNU Track on Saturday for the Ross & Sharon Irwin Invite.
Â
Despite the crowded field, which included teams from NCAA Divisions I-III and the NAIA, PLNU Women's Track & Field put together a strong showing with 11 top-10 finishes.
Â
"The meet performances were outstanding in every event," Head Coach
Jerry Arvin said. "Our girls had several good performances, led by
Aubrie Nex's win in the 1500."
Â
Nex finished first in the 1500 in a time of 4:36.01, winning a dash to the finish line by over a second ahead of second position.
Â
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Elizabeth Satterlee placed third (12:04.55) as the sixth-fastest Sea Lion in the event all-time, in her first time ever running the event.
Â
Ryley Burns finished fifth in the 5,000 meters (18:15.47), leading a strong group of freshman Sea Lions.
Â
"In the 5000, freshmen
Ryley Burns,
Maddie Reeves and
Sydney Stevens all had good races in their first attempts at the collegiate distance," Arvin said.
Â
Bree Gentry ran 2:18.91 in the 800 meters, placing sixth as she improved her personal-best mark.
Â
Madelynn Worley also placed sixth, in the 400 meters, running a time of 57.49 seconds.
Â
Eva Koutelieris finished eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.59 meters, while
Makenna Sullivan placed ninth in the triple jump (10.99 meters).
Â
"
Makenna Sullivan and
Eva Koutelieris were just off their season-best performances in the triple jump and pole vault," Arvin said. "
Madelynn Worley just missed a top-10 performance in the open 400."
Â
PLNU's 4x400 and 4x100 meter relay teams both ran season-best times.
Â
Bree Gentry, Nex, Worley and
Blanca Granados finished fourth in the 4x400 (3:57.98), while
Madeleine Dekkers, Granados, Worley and
Brynn Celani placed sixth in the 4x100 (48.75 seconds).
Â
Anessa Chirgwin recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in throwing events, beginning the day with a ninth-place finish in the hammer (41.97m). She also placed eighth in the discus (40.71m) in her first time competing in the event this season.
Â
Point Loma will host a third-straight meet on Saturday when the Sea Lions take part in the PLNU Track & Field Invitational.
Â
"All-in-all we had lots of season bests and PR's so it was a great day for the ladies, who not only competed but worked the meet as helpers all day," Arvin said. "I was really proud of all of their superb efforts and I can't wait to see next week's competition."
