(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Basketball senior guard
Coby Barnes has been announced as the first ever recipient of the Ethan Hamilton Leadership Scholarship.
The scholarship, named in honor of Point Loma's beloved Athletic Director and former Men's Basketball Head Coach who tragically passed away this summer, is awarded to the men's basketball student-athlete who exemplifies extraordinary character, leadership and athletic distinction.
"Coby has personified everything our program represents," Head Coach
Justin Downer said. "He has developed into an incredible player, person, future husband and leader on campus. He is adored by everyone for not only his kindness, but his toughness and excellence on the floor and in the classroom."
Barnes began his Sea Lions career as a walk-on before working his way into the starting lineup as a freshman and earning a scholarship as a sophomore.
As a junior, Barnes started in all 30 games and earned Second Team All-PacWest honors after averaging 11.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
The Fresno native has played an integral role in three-straight PacWest championship teams.
As a student, Barnes is a three-time Academic All-PacWest honoree and serves as a leader on campus and in the business department. He has spoken amongst his peers at several events, including Time Out Chapel and Opening Day.
Point Loma begins its 2024-25 season on Monday when PLNU travels to Tucson to play against the University of Arizona in an exhibition at 7 p.m.
