(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Volleyball earned its highest national ranking in program history on Monday when the Sea Lions were announced as the No. 17 team in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll.
Â
That ranking surpasses Point Loma's previous highest, which was No. 20.
Â
PLNU held that No. 20 ranking in each of the past two polls but moved up three spots after a pair of sweeps last week, at Vanguard and at home against Azusa Pacific, helped the Sea Lions remain unbeaten on the season.
Â
Â
Two of the primary contributors during those victories were
Abigail Nua (Player of the Week) and
Makenna Joyce (Defender of the Week), who received weekly recognition from the PacWest Conference.
Â
Nua dominated at her outside hitter position, posting a combined 29 kills and 17 digs in just six sets last week. That included a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs versus APU on Thursday, as she hit .448 and .333 in the two victories.
Â
The 5-foot-10 outside hitter, who leads the conference with 4.24 kills/set this season, has now been named PacWest Player of the Week seven times in her career, which is tied for the third most in conference history.
Â
Joyce earns the conference's weekly defensive honor for the second consecutive week after putting together back-to-back performances with 18 digs.
Â
PLNU's libero leads the team and ranks fourth in the PacWest with 4.46 digs/set.
Â
Â
Point Loma (12-0 overall, 6-0 PacWest) returns to the court on Thursday at Jessup. First serve in Rocklin is scheduled for 6 p.m.
