(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Volleyball Assistant Coach
Flavia Virgili has been named the AVCA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Thursday.
She becomes the first Point Loma coach to receive an AVCA national coaching award.
"Flav is just part of the family. She's a former player, GA and now our full-time assistant," Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said. "She's great – works hard, is super humble, and puts everyone else before herself. She's a huge reason why we're having so much success."
Virgili has helped PLNU achieve several program milestones this season, including winning the program's first NCAA West Regional championship.
The Sea Lions earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional, their highest ever NCAA postseason seed, and hosted the regional tournament for the first time.
Virgili now has Point Loma in the NCAA Division II semifinals, as the Sea Lions continue their deepest NCAA postseason run in program history.
After playing for PLNU in 2019 and being a graduate assistant in 2021, Virgili has served as the Sea Lions' lead assistant coach the past two seasons, which have been the two best in Point Loma history.
In 2024, Point Loma posted its best overall record (26-2, .929) in a single season and won an NCAA postseason match for the first time.
That set the stage for an even better 2025, with PLNU's historic postseason run coming after winning a second PacWest championship in three seasons.
No. 3 seed Point Loma (28-4 overall) swept No. 6 seed Bentley on Thursday in the national quarterfinals to advance to Friday's semifinal round against No. 2 seed Concordia-St. Paul (30-5) at 4 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. PT in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
