PLNU MEN'S SOCCER RECEIVES TOP HONORS FROM PACWEST

11/13/2024 6:55:00 PM

(SAN DIEGO) After winning a second straight PacWest title, PLNU Men's Soccer has earned several conference postseason awards as announced on Wednesday.

Sophomore forward Elijah Langford was named the PacWest Player of the Year, sophomore defender Ryan Doyle was selected as the PacWest Defender of the Year and Head Coach Phil Wolf was voted the PacWest Coach of the Year, to highlight Point Loma's award recipients.

Nine Sea Lions in total earned All-PacWest honors, the most in the conference and just one shy of last year's program record of 10.

Senior midfielder Milan Diklic, senior forward Felix Calero, senior defender Milo Libby and sophomore midfielder Simon Sagal join Langford and Doyle on the All-PacWest First Team. PLNU's six All-PacWest First Team honorees tie a program record set last season.

Sophomore forward Zach Mercieca and sophomore midfielder Emmett Layman earned All-PacWest Second Team honors, while freshman goalkeeper Jeremy Caringella received All-PacWest Third Team recognition.

Langford ranks second in the PacWest this season in goals (10) and assists (8). He is PLNU's first double-digit goal scorer since 2019 and becomes the second Sea Lion to be awarded the conference's top annual honor.

Doyle and Libby have anchored PLNU's defense this season that leads the conference in goals against average (1.00), which was even lower (0.82) in conference play. Doyle, who also has two assists this season, leads the team in minutes played with 1,337.

Libby, the 2023 PacWest Defender of the Year, earns his third straight All-PacWest honor and second consecutive First Team nod.

Diklic is Point Loma's first ever three-time All-PacWest First Team honoree. He has scored twice and added one assist on the season, serving as a key cog in the center of PLNU's midfield.

Calero leads the PacWest in assists with nine, while also finding the back of the net on seven occasions to rank fifth in the conference in goals. He earns his second consecutive First Team All-PacWest award in two years on The Point.

Sagal has scored three goals and added eight assists as a primary creator in PLNU's midfield, ranking second in the PacWest in assists behind Calero.

Mercieca is second on the team and third in the PacWest with nine goals this year, while also providing a pair of assists.

Layman has made an immediate impact on The Point in his first year as a Sea Lion, providing six assists (fifth most in the conference) and scoring twice.

Caringella led all PacWest goalkeepers in conference play with a 0.50 goals against average, only conceding three goals in his six starts.

Wolf earns his second straight PacWest Coach of the Year honor and third in the last five seasons. He has coached the Sea Lions to their best national ranking in program history this season, while the squad is currently ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Super Region 4 rankings.

Point Loma (11-2-3 overall, 9-1-1 PacWest) is the No. 1 seed in the PacWest Championships, which begin on Thursday.

PLNU will take on fourth-seeded Fresno Pacific in the semifinals on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Irvine at the OC Great Park (Field 18) with a berth in Saturday's PacWest Championship on the line.
