Box Score 2 The NAIA second-ranked Sea Lions completed a three-game sweep of visiting Savannah Art & Design by winning a pair of games at Carroll B. Land Stadium Saturday, 14-3 and 10-2.
PLNU, which had been held to just two runs in its first two games, woke up offensively to pound out 30 hits and 22 runs against the Bee pitching staff on Saturday to improve to 3-0-1 on the year.
The Sea Lions connected for 18 hits in the opener, and held the Bees (0-3) to half as many. PLNU plated half of its runs after the first two frames, starting with a three-run first highlighted by a double from shortstop
Tyler Kuehl, who later clubbed a homerun in the game as did first baseman
Ian MacMaster. In the second inning, with two on base, third baseman
Wes Kartch lined one over the fence for three of the five runs to give the Sea Lions an early 8-0 lead.
The Green and Gold tacked on runs in the third, fifth and eighth innings and held Savannah to one run until the top of ninth, in which shortstop Patrick Braswell doubled for an RBI in the two-run effort.
PLNU senior
Brandon Dixon took the mound for six frames to get his first win of the season (1-0). He allowed five hits and one run and walked one. The lefty matched each hit surrendered with five strikeouts. Herter allowed one run in two innings and
Robby Ross took over in the ninth and allowed three hits and two runs.
Second baseman
Alex Cameron went 2-for-4, Winnick, Kartch, designated hitter Kevin Newberg and catcher
Mike Nigolian all went 2-for-3.
The Bees cycled through five hurlers but it was starter Nick Iuni who was hung with loss (0-1) after seven hits and seven runs in 1.1 innings.
The Sea Lions posted 12 hits in the nightcap, four of which came from designated hitter
Steven Winnick, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI. Center fielder
Allen Boyer added three hits in the win.
PLNU took a 4-0 lead after two innings of action in game two. The Bees scored twice in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, but a homer from Boyer in the fourth and a RBI single from
JJ Reading put the Sea Lions up 6-1. Left fielder
Rashad Taylor ripped a two-run homer in a four-run sixth to push the Sea Lion lead from four runs to eight.
Josh Dexheimer notched his first run of the season (1-0) after yielding only one hit in two innings of relief.
KC Kartch started, giving up four hits and two runs in three innings and exited in the fourth after the first three batters reached base.
Maurice Wilhelm and
Kenny Houser each took care of an inning to close things out. Wilhelm threw a perfect sixth and Houser allowed two runners, but stranded them by fanning Savannah right fielder Mike Hines to end the twinbill.
For the Bees, third baseman John Michael Crawford and second baseman Patrick Braswell both went 2-for-4. Starter Stephen Shackleford was saddled with the loss (0-1) after allowing eight hits and six runs (four earned) while walking two. Ty Donaldson allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) in the sixth.
The Sea Lions will travel to UCSD on Tuesday for at 2 p.m. non-conference tilt.
