Boyer Leads PLNU Over Crosstown UCSD

A big day by Allen Boyer helped the NAIA No. 2-ranked Sea Lions overcome four errors and NCAA DII #3 UC San Diego 8-6 at Triton Ballpark Tuesday afternoon. Boyer, an outfielder from San Diego Mesa College, collected four extra base hits and knocked in four.

The crosstown match up took nearly three and a half hours to complete, partially due to the 23 players used by the Tritons (1-1), six of which were pitchers. Point Loma utilized 13 players in the non-conference tilt.

PLNU opened the scoring in the top of the first after third baseman Wes Kartch singled in two. The 2-0 lead held up until the bottom of the third when UCSD scored three times off of Sea Lion starter Steven Winnick.

Down 3-2, PLNU (4-0-1) pushed across four in the sixth. Pinch hitter Jeff Fox and Boyer each delivered two-run hits in the frame. UCSD closed the gap by a run with a run in the seventh but the Sea Lions went ahead by two more in the eighth thanks to Boyer's fourth hit of the day, a two-run homerun.

The Tritons weren't ready to give in though. UCSD scored twice in the bottom of the eighth and had the tying runs on base in the ninth before PLNU reliever Maurice Wilhelm ended the threat and the game with a strikeout.

Winnick (1-0) picked up his first win as a starter. The senior allowed three runs on six hits in six innings for work. Davis Koenig tossed the seventh before giving way to Wilhelm with one on in the eighth.

Boyer collected half of PLNU's hits Tuesday. Kartch was 2-for-4.

The losing pitcher was Kirby St. John (0-1). He was the second pitcher to toe the rubber for UCSD, surrendering three runs in 2.1 innings. Grant Blauer, Brandon Gregorich and Evan Kehoe each had two hits for the Tritons.

The Sea Lions take a few days off before hosting Chapman University next Wednesday starting at 2:00 pm.
