SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- A few days after recording one of its most impressive wins of the year, NAIA No. 17 Point Loma Nazarene suffered one of its toughest losses of the year, falling at The Master's 3-2 Saturday night (25-16, 25-22, 28-30, 16-25, 15-11).
The Sea Lions fell to 14-8 overall, 6-8 GSAC. The win pushes the Lady Mustangs record to 18-11, 6-8 GSAC.
TMC took what looked like an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the conference match. The Mustangs cruised to a set one win before taking the last three points of the second set. With their backs against the wall, though, the Sea Lions responded with a marathon win in the third and then notched an easy victory in the fourth to send the match to a deciding fifth.
But, after an initial back-and-forth early on in the final stanza, the Mustangs went ahead 9-6 and never looked back, winning by four.
Loma hit just .149 for the match and though they had 13 aces, the Sea Lions misfired on 18 serves and had a total of 29 attack errors. Tabitha Henken led the team with 21 kills and 12 digs. Alyssa Dwyer put down 12 kills and had five blocks. Aimee Bird served up 41 assists in the loss.
The Sea Lions had 11 team blocks but the Mustangs were right behind with 10. Along with Dwyer, Destiney McIntyre paced Loma with five total blocks. TMC kept the ball off the floor much better than did PLNU as they out-dug the Sea Lions
67 to 49.
Samantha Dougherty had a team high 13 kills and a team high 18 digs in the game for the Mustangs who hit .193 collectively. Tami Brown had a game high .643 hitting percentage while
Alyssa Gergins led TMC with 24 assists.
