FULLERTON, Calif. – The Sea Lions regained a .500 GSAC winning percentage Saturday night, after sweeping Hope International University in Darling Pavilion (25-22, 25-12, 25-12).
NAIA No. 9-ranked Point Loma Nazarene outhit the Royals .351-.100, as made very evident by the large scoring gap.
The first set looked absolutely nothing like the last two for Hope International. HIU and PLNU flip-flopped scores for the majority of the set, until
Delaney McCraney and
Alyssa Dwyer's unstoppable hitting put the Sea Lions on top for good.
Things got away from the Royals very quickly in the second game. Within minutes the Sea Lions were already up 10-5. By the end of the set, Point Loma scored 13 points in the same time it took Hope to score four. They easily took the game by, coincidentally, 13 points.
The third and final set started surprisingly different. The Royals were able to get ahead of the Sea Lions for a number of points, but as soon as Dwyer and
Tabitha Henken kicked in, the rest was history.
Dwyer continued to dominate with 14 points and four blocks. Henken added 10 stingers while McCraney had nine winners of her own.
Aimee Bird set 39 balls and McCraney led the team with 13 digs. Even in the win, the Sea Lions still managed to record 10 service errors, while the losing Royals only committed four.
HIU's Amanda Aguilar had the most success, recording a .375 hitting percentage. The Royals are 1-7 in conference. The Sea Lions are now 4-4, 12-4 overall.
Point Loma will host San Diego Christian on Tuesday, Oct 11 at 7 pm.
