SAN DIEGO -- Point Loma Nazarene sent seniors
Aimee Bird and
Tabitha Henken off in style by sweeping Hope International Saturday night in Golden Gymnasium (25-20, 25-14, 25-18). The match was the final regular season home game of the year.
After beating No.11-ranked Biola University in a thrilling tilt Tuesday evening, the Sea Lions continued to dazzle, beating the Roayls by a total of 23 points.
Off to a good start in the first set, the Sea Lions finally broke away after an early seven-all score. Thanks to multiple kills and service aces, PLNU found themselves four points ahead. From there, the team would maintain the lead and control the rest of the match.
Though the Eagles kept up with the Sea Lions early in the second set, just like the first, Point Loma made a run after an early eight-all score. Soon enough, the Green and Gold was ahead 16-10. Hope International would only score four more points in the set due to a combination of Sea Lion kills, aces, and untimely attack errors by the Royals.
Point Loma never gave up the lead in the third and final game. The host team was up 10-4 early and nothing would change; the margin remained the same and the Sea Lions cruised to its second consecutive victory.
Alyssa Dwyer missed just two attack attempts for the whole night. The sophomore outside hitter recorded 10 kills on just 12 swings for a .833 percentage.
Maddie Dahms put in 13 kills on just 17 tries (.765) and Henken added 11 winners of her own.
Bird had 46 assists while
Nicole Eiler recorded a team-high 12 digs.
The Sea Lions, which hit a robust .455 Saturday, now sit at a .500 record in GSAC; 8-8 in the conference, 16-8 overall. HIU falls to 5-24 overall, 1-15 GSAC.
On Tuesday, Nov 8, they will face San Diego Christian on the road at 7 pm.
