Henken Makes History as Sea Lions Roll

Senior Hitter Becomes Career Kills Leader in 3-1 Win over SDCC

box score

EL CAJON, Calif. -- Tabitha Henken tallied 19 kills to become the all-time career kills leader in PLNU history, and the NAIA No. 16-ranked Sea Lions battled back from one set down to power past San Diego Christian Tuesday night (23-25, 25-11, 25-14, 25-10).

With the win, the Sea Lions raised their GSAC record to 9-8 and improved to 17-8 overall. On Saturday, the team will travel up to Santa Barbara to face Westmont in their final regular season match on the season.

The story Tuesday was Henken. The first-team NAIA All-American now has 1948 career kills, three more than Darci Hess (1994-97) the previous PLNU record-holder. With one more regular season match remaining as well as the postseason, it's very likely that Henken will reach 2,000 career kills by the time her senior season ends.

Alyssa Dwyer also registered 19 kills in the win with Delaney McCraney contributing 11 winners. Maddie Dahms had eight kills and Aimee Bird six. Bird chipped in with 57 assists and 14 digs. McCraney added 13 digs, Henken 11 and Caitlin Bernardin 10.

The Sea Lions were surprised by the Hawks in the opening set. The last time that San Diego Christian took a set off of PLNU was in 2004.

The Green and Gold claimed the next three sets in quick fashion, though, winning by margins of 14, 11 and 15 points. Henken notched her record setting kill late in the fourth.

PLNU hit .417 as a team and held the Hawks to .125. The Sea Lions also had 20 more digs than did SDCC and seven more aces.
