CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene dropped its third straight game Saturday night, falling 65-49 at NCAA DIII Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
CMS's Chris Blees led all scorers 18 points and 8 rebounds, finishing as one of four Stags with double figures.
On the other hand, no Sea Lions reached double digits, but senior
Jake Johnston paced the team with nine points, followed by senior
Wil Bush and sophomore
Marek Klassen, who each finished with eight.
Junior
Todd Campbell scored seven points to go along with six rebounds and four steals.
The host Stags shot 48 percent (23-48) from the field, a big advantage over the Sea Lions' 33 percent (16-49).
Furthermore, CMS shot a blistering 50 percent from long range, going 7-14 from downtown. Point Loma connected on just 5 of their 20 attempts from behind the arc.
After taking a 3-2 lead in the opening minutes, PLNU never led again all night. The Stags quickly built up a 13-5 lead, capitalizing on several turnovers and missed shots by PLNU. The Green and Gold entered halftime down 37-23.
The Sea Lions' play improved greatly in the second half, and at one point they narrowed the lead to nine. But the Stags continued to make shots, and would lead by as much as 22 before settling on the 16-point margin.
Loma finished with 14 turnovers, their fewest of the season, but were heavily outrebounded by a margin of 35-24.
The non-conference loss drops the Sea Lions record to 4-3 overall. With the win, CMS remains undefeated on the season at 9-0.
The Sea Lions will have all of next week off, as they get ready for semester finals. They next host Thompson Rivers University of Canada on Saturday, Dec. 17. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 pm.
