Bats Come Alive in PLNU Win

Molina, Kuehl and Eichhorst homer in 22-4 victory

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO -- The NAIA No. 8-ranked Sea Lions scored in every inning en route to a 22-3 win over visiting Arizona Christian Friday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for nine innings but halted after seven.

Loma's welcome campaign for the first-year ACU program started with six runs in the bottom of the first, followed by five in the second, seven in the third, and four more drizzled throughout the remaining three innings.

The bats were hot and everybody was hitting. Tyler Kuehl, Edgar Molina, and Tyler Eichhorst all hit bombs while combining for nine RBI. Freshman Clinton Harwick was 2-for-3 with three RBI; Rashad Taylor went 2-for-4 with two RBI; Jack Diamond had a base knock and two RBI; while Caleb Wenzel and Kendall Konopka had a hit apiece and added three RBI together.

Transfer designated hitter Scott Stidham had a standout performance with four hits in five at bats and two RBI.

Of course it's important to not forget the pitching that kept the Eagles to just three runs and seven hits. Freshman hurler Garrett Levsen evened his record to 1-1 by earning the win. The 6-foot-3 right-hander tossed five full innings and gave up six hits and three runs while striking out five. Junior transfer Kelson Boyer entered in relief in the sixth inning, giving up just one hit over two scoreless frames.

The big lead allowed Point Loma  coach Joe Schaefer a chance to get his reserves in; 18 players ended up seeing action.

PLNU looked like it had a chance for the program-record 29 runs, scored against Wheaton (IL) in 2004, but not only had the run production slowed down over the final few frames, the game was cut short two innings.

The Sea Lions had 18 hits on the day and improve their record to 3-1. They will host Arizona Christian (6-6) again Saturday in a double header starting at 11:00 am.
