SAN DIEGO – NAIA No. 10-ranked Point Loma Nazarene upset visiting #5 Concordia 6-3 Tuesday at the PLNU Tennis Courts. Even 3-3 after singles play, the Sea Lions swept through doubles to seal the victory.

Singles kicked off the match for the guys and ended in a split score 3-3 as both teams fought to control the match. Court one was finished first and dealt Sea Lions' first loss to Tyler Bowman after a tough match against Concordia senior Andrey Potapkin, 7-5, 6-1.

The deficit didn't last long as courts two and three pulled PLNU ahead with straight sets wins. Joel Myers took care of business on court two  6-3, 6-3 while KC Ensley finally managed on court three to close out Bruno Santarelli, 6-1 7-6.

The Eagles took the next two points to take a brief 3-2 match lead on courts five and six from DJ Jaehnig and Mike Zablan respectively. Though Jaenhig was close, losing 7-5, 7-5, only Zablan split sets, taking the first 6-4 over Abhinauv Vanugopal but dropping the second 6-0 and eventually losing 6-4 in the third.

Court four's match was the last to conclude and Sea Lion Diego Tavera emerged triumphant with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win in the last set over Ryan McNamara, evening up the match at 3-all going into doubles.

Doubles looked to be tough for the Green and Gold but the men took it in stride and powered through to win all three matches. Court three's duo of Jaehnig and Tavera finished first with an 8-4 victory over Venugopal and Jan Guler. Myers/ Ensley on court one and Bowman/Tavera and  two followed suit, both posting 8-5 wins to give the Sea Lions the final 6-3 margin of victory.

"I'm really proud of our guys," said Coach Rich Hills. "We've shown what we are capable of. Now we just have to follow through with it."

Loma's record bumps to 2-0, 1-0 GSAC in a promising start for this season while Concordia drops to 2-2 overall, 2-1 GSAC. PLNU is on the go Thursday, hosting currently undefeated Grand Canyon University at 2 p.m.
