SAN DIEGO -- Visiting Biola scored four first innings runs en route to a 7-2 win over Point Loma Nazarene Thursday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium. The loss dropped the Sea Lions to 6-3 overall, 1-1 GSAC. The Eagles improved to 6-6, 1-1 GSAC.
Biola got to Levsen with four runs in their first at-bat. The PLNU freshman allowed all four runs before retiring a batter. He walked the leadoff hitter before giving up singles to the next two batters, including a RBI hit to Vinnie Fayard. Up stepped BU cleanup hitter Mac Sullivan, who clubbed a three-run shot over the fence in right center to give the visitor's a 4-0 advantage.
Though the damage was done, Levsen managed to strike out two of the next three batters and avoid any further runs.
Loma quickly halved the deficit with two runs in the home half of the first thanks in part to the wildness of Eagle starter Kevin Ryan who walked Kendall Konopka to start the inning and then hit PLNU's second batter, Clinton Harwick. Ryan uncorked a pair of wild pitches, one of which plated Konopka.
The next two Sea Lion hitters made outs but Edgar Molina walked and Tyler Kuehl collected a RBI single. After another walk, Point Loma had the bases loaded and was on the verge of a breakout inning. The threat fizzled on a strikeout, however.
Both hurlers, who looked like they wouldn't survive more than an inning or two, settled in from the second inning on. Each faced multiple threats but was able to keep the opposition off the board through five and a half innings.
Jack Diamond chased Ryan with a leadoff double in the sixth but reliever Kyle Atkins got three outs to preserve the two-run Biola lead.
Josh Dexheimer took over for Levsen to start the seventh and was greeted with a double by Boone Farrington. The Eagles would tack on their fifth run in the inning after a RBI single from Benji Sutherland.
Biola went ahead 7-2 in the eighth after getting to the third Sea Lion reliever, Kenny Houser, for a run. Knocking in runs for the Eagles were Vinny Fayard and Johnny Farrington who plated his brother with a hit.
Atkins toed the rubber for three hitless innings but was denied the save when Cameron McVey was summed from the pen for the ninth. Ryan (2-0) got the win for the Eagles with Levsen (1-2) hung with the loss.
The Sea Lions were held to just six hits, two of which came off the bat of Harwick.
The two teams are scheduled wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader in La Mirada on Saturday. Rain is expected in the forecast, though, which will more than likely force a postponement.
