Sea Lions Salvage Split with CUI

CUI wins opener 6-4; PLNU nightcap 7-3

BOX GAME ONE | BOX GAME TWO

SAN DIEGO – NAIA No. 8-ranked Point Loma Nazarene split a GSAC doubleheader with visiting Concordia at Carroll B. Stadium Saturday. CUI took the opener 6-4 with the Sea Lions winning the nightcap 7-3. PLNU's game two victory snapped a five-game losing skid and stopped Concordia's six-game win streak.

With the split the Sea Lions stand at 10-8 overall, 5-6 GSAC while the Eagles are 12-7, 5-7 GSAC.

Concordia plated three first-inning runs to take an early lead in game one.  Not much happened for the next few frames though PLNU had a bases-loaded, no outs opportunity in the second but failed to score against Eagle starter Blake Harrison.

The Sea Lions cut the deficit to one run by pushing two across in the seventh. CUI responded with three in the eighth to go up 6-2. PLNU made things interesting by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth but the rally would fall short.

Harrison improved to 2-0 with the win with Ryan Day earning his third save of the year.

Brett Carlile fell to 2-2 after giving up three runs in a five-inning start. Kellen Stewart and Maurice Wilhelm each threw two innings of relief.

PLNU first baseman Edgar Molina went 4-for-4 in the loss. Third baseman Shain Stoner had two hits.

The Sea Lions broke out with four runs in the second inning of game two capped by a two-run homerun by second baseman Tyler Kuehl.

Concordia sliced into the PLNU lead with two in the fourth and one in the fifth but a pair of Point Loma insurance runs late put the game out of reach.

Kuehl drove in three of the Sea Lion's seven runs in the nightcap. Bryan Nicholson hit a two-run homer for the Eagles in the loss.

Jack Archie went the distance for PLNU to improve to 1-2 on the season. Archie allowed just five hits in six frames of work and only really made one bad pitch out of the 82 he threw Saturday - an offering to Nicholson.

Andrew Brooks (0-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles. Brooks allowed six runs but just one was earned. The Eagles made four errors in the nightcap.

The Sea Lions are at Azusa Pacific on Wednesday and Thursday, both games starting at 5:00 pm. The two teams then come to PLNU to play a twinbill on Saturday.

APU (12-11, 5-7 GSAC) started the year slowly, but have come on of late. This past week the Cougars were 2-2 and handed first-place California Baptist its first two conference losses of 2011.
