SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene's unbeaten season came to an end Monday after a 6-3 non-conference loss to visiting Amherst College (Mass.). The NAIA No. 6-ranked Sea Lions fall to 7-1 on the year while the NCAA DIII Lord Jeffs improved to 7-0.
From the start the match looked to be tough. Doubles opened with only Joel Myers and KC Ensley on court one pulling off a close 9-8 win for the Sea Lions. The PLNU duo faced match points but managed to battle back and claim the point.
First to lose were DJ Jaehnig and Angel Tavera on court three, falling quickly at 8-1. Next was court two where Diego Tavera and Tyler Bowman got closer but still ended up losing 8-4.
Though Myers cruised to a singles win on one, 6-0, 6-1 versus Mark Kahan, it wasn't in the cards for PLNU Tuesday. Ensley lost at three 6-4, 6-0. Court four finished next with Diego Tavera falling 6-3, 6-2.
Loma's last win came from the next match at court five. Jaehnig took on Amherst senior Moritz Koenig, winning the first set 6-4, and the next 6-2. However, The Lord Jeffs took the overall match with junior Wes Waterman taking over Sea Lion Mike Zablan in three 6-0, 0-6, 6-1. Bowman on court two finished things up. After splitting the first two sets 7-6 and 6-4, Bowman lost the ten point tie breaker 10-4.
Head coach Rich Hills said, "Amherst is the best DIII team in the country. We didn't expect them to come out as good as they were. They played really well today."
Myers, who played No. 1 for PLNU today, added, "They were good, but our guys just didn't show up today. It was tough."
Though Loma's overall streak is broken, their GSAC mark remains unchanged at 4-0. The Sea Lions will grab a quick night's sleep before taking on Lewis-Clark State College from Idaho Tuesday at the PLNU Tennis Courts starting at 2:00 pm.
