LAKESIDE, Calif. -- NAIA No. 8-ranked Point Loma Nazarene outlasted San Diego Christian 11-7 in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Stars Field Wednesday afternoon. The Sea Lions scored eight runs over the final four frames to hold off the Hawks in a contest that took nearly four hours to complete.
The second game of the four game series will be held at Stars Field, starting at 2:00 pm on Thursday. After that the two teams make their way to Point Loma for a twinbill on Saturday.
Shain Stoner got the ball rolling for PLNU, smashing his first homer of the year in the top of the first. SDCC evened the score in the second. Rashad Taylor tripled in a pair of runs in the fourth to give the Sea Lions a 3-1 lead.
Point Loma (7-3, 2-1 GSAC) pushed across two more runs in the fifth and then put up four more in the seventh, highlighted by Stoner's two-run double, to take a 9-2 lead. The Hawks (2-7, 0-3) answered with four runs of their own in the home half of the frame, closing the gap to just two runs, 9-7.
The Sea Lions added two insurance runs in the ninth, when Kendall Konopka doubled in two runs, for the 11-7 final.
PLNU employed four pitchers against SDCC. Starter Chris Gonzales lasted three innings before giving way to Brett Carlile who earned the win 2-0 after 3.2 frames on the hill. Kelsen Boyer tossed an inning and Maurice Wilhelm notched his second save of the year after 1.1 scoreless frames.
Adair Robles (1-2) was the losing pitcher, yielding five runs in six innings.
The Sea Lions collected 16 hits as a team. Stoner, the Sea Lion third baseman, went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Taylor and Edgar Molina had three hits apiece.
