BOX SCORE
FRESNO, Calif. -- When his team loses, Point Loma Nazarene head coach Rich Hills often says, "we came in second." That phrase has been out of Hills' vocabulary this year as the longtime Loma leader has only coached wins throughout the first 11 matches of the 2011 season.
But on Wednesday, the NAIA No. 3-ranked Sea Lions came in second, losing to No. 1 Fresno Pacific 6-3.
PLNU fell to 11-1 overall, 7-1 against Golden State Athletic Conference teams. The Sunbirds extended their GSAC win streak to 79 matches and improved to 11-4, 9-0 conference.
Doubles began the match that was originally scheduled for Saturday but postponed due to rain in the Central Valley. The Sea Lions grabbed just one of three possible points, Kristin Strimple and Ashley Litchfield beating Marie Boura and Erika Januskova 8-6.
The other two PLNU pairings: Rachel Owens/Jessica Kwan and Kiersten Steinhauer/Wileen Chiu fell 8-2 and 8-6 respectively.
Strimple and Chiu on one and six were the only PLNU players to win in singles. Strimple defeated Sara Celma 6-4, 7-6 and Chiu topped Elizabeth McFeeters 6-3, 6-3.
The middle section of the PLNU ladder did not fare as well. Litchfield was beaten 6-2, 6-1 on two; Kwan lost 6-0, 6-2 on three; Maika Adair fell 6-3, 7-6 on four and Owens lost 6-3, 6-3 on five.
The Sea Lions head home where they will take on Biola on Saturday starting at 11:00 am.
