SAN DIEGO – NAIA No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene split a GSAC DH with San Diego Christian on Saturday. The Sea Lions won a wild game one 13-12 in 11 innings while the visiting Hawks won the nightcap 6-3.
PLNU and Hawks played were on the field at Carroll B. Land Stadium for over four hours in the opening game that PLNU ended up finally claiming in extra innings.
San Diego Christian scored four runs before making an out to start the day's competition, thanks to two-run homeruns from both Ryan Inverso and David Kazcor.
Loma responded with three runs in the home half of the frame, highlighted by a two-run double from Shain Stoner. The game was quiet for a couple of innings until the Sea Lions pushed three across in the bottom of the third.
The Hawks did the same in the top of the fourth to make the score 7-6 SDCC. The two teams each pushed two home in the sixth and PLNU added two more in the seventh on back-to-back round-trippers from Stoner and Edgar Molina to go up by one.
PLNU reliever Kelsen Boyer was replaced after 2.1 scoreless innings with Maurice Wilhelm. The usually dependable closer yielded the tying run, however, and after the Sea Lions failed on a bases-loaded, no-out threat in the bottom of the ninth, the game went into extras.
The Green and Gold missed on bases-loaded another opportunity in the 10th as well.
San Diego Christian scored twice in the top of the 11th to take a 12-10 lead. But the Sea Lions were able to get to the depleted Hawk pen for three runs in their at-bat. Clinton Harwick pushed across the first run the hard way – getting hit by a pitch. A sac-fly by Tyler Kuehl evened the game and a clutch RBI single from DH Scott Stidham got the third run across and finally ended the conference tilt.
The two teams used 11 pitchers; the Hawks seven, PLNU four. Getting the win was Wilhelm (1-0) after a three-inning stint.
The sixth hurler for SDCC was Greg Joseph, he was hung with the loss after surrendering three runs in a third of an inning.
The Hawks outhit PLNU, 17-16. Stidham, Stoner and Edgar Molina had three hits apiece; Stoner and Molina each drove in three.
Game two looked like it was going to swing the Sea Lion's way after the team posted a two-run second. But San Diego Christian exploded for six runs in the fourth. The Hawks collected eight hits in the frame and sent 10 men to the plate.
Marco Solis went the distance for SDCC, allowing three runs on five hits. Kenny Houser (1-1) started and lost for PLNU. The senior cruised through three innings before giving up a six-spot in the fourth.
Point Loma now stands at 9-4 overall, 4-2 GSAC and the Hawks are 3-9, 1-1 GSAC.
The Sea Lions play Biola on Monday in a makeup game of an earlier rainout. The tilt will start at 2:00 pm in La Mirada.
