SANTA CLARITA and LA MIRADA, Calif. – The NAIA No. 3-ranked Point Loma Nazarene women's tennis team divided its team in two in order to get in two matches against two different GSAC opponents on Saturday. Both Sea Lion split squads still registered wins: 9-0 at Biola and 8-1 at The Master's.
PLNU improved to 18-1 with the two victories, 13-1 in GSAC play. The Master's drop to 6-14 and 4-12 in GSAC while Biola falls to 3-19 overall and 2-13 in GSAC.
Scheduling two matches on the same day meant a decision for head coach Rich Hills. How do you play both? Easy. You split the team. So, he divided the ladder and then added other girls until he had two full teams to play.
The Master's match had Ashley Litchfield, Rachel Owens, Wileen Chiu and Kiersten Steinhauer from the ladder with Naomi Garcia and Brooke Foster supplementing. Biola's match had Kristin Strimple, Jessica Kwan, and Maika Adiar with additions Hope Penner, Kolbie Kiefer and Samantha Mohr.
The Master's match went fairly smoothly. Singles was pulled off with only court five splitting sets. Both Steinhauer and Foster swept through their sets 6-0, 6-0 on courts four and six respectively while Litchfield won powered through 6-0, 6-1 on court one. Foster not only overcame her opponent, she battled through a fever and the 100 degree temperatures. Owens took her match 6-1, 6-0 on court two while Chiu on court three finished 6-1, 6-2.
Garcia on court five had a tough match, losing the first set 7-5, then going on to win the second by the same score. To decide the match, a ten-point tie breaker was played which Garcia managed to win 10-6 in a match that took two and a half hours to complete.
Doubles was the only place Loma didn't sweep, with one loss on court three. Courts one and two saw 8-2 wins from teams Litchfield and Owens and Steinhauer and Chiu respectively. Garcia and Foster ended up defeated 8-3.
Biola's match went even better for Loma. In singles Strimple on court one had a tough first set but she pulled off a 7-5 win. Then she went on to win the next set 6-0. The rest played hard and won better with Kwan on two emerging 6-0, 6-1, Adair on three triumphing 6-1, 6-0, Penner on dour won in straight 6-0 sets while Mohr finished with a respectable 6-2, 6-4 score and Kiefer ended up winning 6-2, 6-1.
Doubles was the same with courts one and two winning by the same margin, scoring 8-1. The wins came from Strimple and Kwan on one and Penner and Adair on two. Kiefer and Mohr also won their match 8-4.
The Sea Lions schedule doesn't take a break as the girls face rival Fresno Pacific in a home conference match on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The No. 1 Sunbirds are the only team to beat PLNU this season.
