Point Loma Suffers Lopsided Loss

Sea Lions Fail to Contain CBU Offense in 13-5 Setback

BOX SCORE

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- It seems like Déjà Vu all over again as the Sea Lions yielded double-digit runs to California Baptist for the second straight game. And just like 2010, it's PLNU being shoved around by the Lancers in the final conference series of the year.

On Thursday, Point Loma Nazarene found itself down 11-1 early on at Totman Stadium. Though they battled to the end, the Sea Lions lost to third-ranked CBU 13-5. The first-place Lancers improved to 40-11, 25-9 GSAC. The Green and Gold slipped to 26-19, 18-16.

The four-game series between PLNU and CBU wraps up on Saturday with a twin-bill at Point Loma's Carroll B. Land Stadium. The Lancers need just one victory to clinch its second straight GSAC title. The Sea Lions, meanwhile, are still jockeying for position in conference. The final standings will determine the team's first playoff opponent.

PLNU struck first Thursday when Scott Stidham hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning. California Baptist answered with two in the home half of the frame and never looked back. The Lancers pulled away after they scored nine runs over the fourth and fifth innings to take an 11-1 lead.

Rashad Taylor slammed a three-run homer in the seventh and Edgar Molina singled in a run in the eighth, but it was too-little-too-late for the Sea Lions.

PLNU starter Kelsen Boyer (2-2) suffered the loss, lasting just 3.2 innings in which he gave up six runs – four earned – on seven hits. Maurice Wilhelm and Ryan Sharpley were also hit hard in relief stints for the Sea Lions.

Jesse Arreola (6-3) picked up the win for CBU. He went 7.1 innings before giving way to Jon Bengard.

Shain Stoner was 3-for-4 for Point Loma. Leading the Lancer charge was Matt Marnati (3-for-5, 3 RBI) and Brian Sharp (2-for-4, 4 runs, 3 RBI).
