SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene dropped a Golden State Athletic Conference twinbill at The Master's Saturday, losing game one 3-1 and game two 6-4.
The Sea Lions fall to 8-9 overall, 1-3 GSAC while the Mustangs improved to 14-4, 3-1.
TMC starter Charlie Gillies held Point Loma to just one run on three hits in the opener. Gillies upped his mark to 4-1 with the complete-game effort and added eight strikeouts to his season tally.
The Mustangs scored the day's first run in their first at-bat. The Sea Lions evened the score at 1-1 in the third when Marcus Heisner singled home Trey Hunt. PLNU had two hits in the frame but would go hitless through the final six innings.
Point Loma started Tyler Garkow (1-3) was matching Gillies through six. The Mustangs pushed across a run in the inning when Jonathan Popadics doubled home Caleb Halverson. TMC added an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Sam Sadler.
PLNU was in great position to earn a split in the nightcap. The Sea Lions were leading 4-3 in the eighth before Bryan Lucas hit a three-run homerun off reliever Chris Gonzales. That blast proved to be the game-winner for the Mustangs.
Loma struck first in game two when Clinton Harwick and Ricky Gingras each drove in runs in PLNU's third at-bat. The Mustangs responded with three in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run shot from Joe Riddle.
The Green and Gold scored single runs in the sixth and seventh, however, to take a 4-3 lead. Bryan Burkhead plated Daniel Hernandez in the sixth and Heisner put down a RBI bunt single in the seventh.
PLNU starter Garrett Levsen allowed three runs on five hits in six innings but was not involved in the decision; neither was TMC starter James Scott. Gonzales suffered the loss.
Picking up the win was Tommy Kister (2-1) with an inning of relief. Mustang Closer Zack Anderson ended the day by setting the Sea Lions down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
PLNU will be on the road for a GSAC doubleheader this Thursday when they travel to San Diego Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
