SAN DIEGO – Visiting Chapman scored 10 runs over the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 13-6 win over Point Loma Nazarene Tuesday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium. The Sea Lions drop to 4-3 with the non-conference loss while the Panthers, second-ranked in the NCAA DIII, improved to 3-1.
CU jumped on Sea Lion starter Garrett Levsen for two first inning runs. The big hit came off the bat of Steve Greenberg whose liner was nearly gloved by Brian Burkhead in centerfield but instead went for a two-run double.
Chapman added another run in the second when Charlie James plated Taber Watson with a double.
PLNU evened the game in the fourth inning. Tyler Hanzawa led things off with a single to right and moved to second when JJ Reading was hit by a pitch. Clinton Harwick then had an infield single to load the bases. Ricky Gingras coaxed a walk to force in the first Sea Lion run. A grounder by Burkhead brought home the second run and a hit from Tyler Nordgren tied the game at 3-3.
Levsen (0-2) set down 12 consecutive Panthers since allowing Watson's double, but his defense let him down in the top of the sixth. James Parr reached base on an error to start the frame, Levsen walked Charlie Piro, and another Sea Lion error allowed Greenberg to reach first and load the bases.
Taber Watson made Point Loma pay by lacing a bases-clearing double just inside the third-base line. Troy Newman later hit a sac-fly to score Watson for the fourth Panther run of the inning to make the score 7-3 Chapman.
A double-play scored a Point Loma run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-4. The Panthers answered with six runs in the next half inning, though – sending nine batters to the plate – to put the game away.
Clinton Harwick singled home two runs in the bottom of the ninth to end the day's scoring.
Chapman scored 13 runs but had only nine hits. The Panthers were aided by four PLNU errors and eight free passes.
The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers (seven for Chapman). Dani Schlarmann was the lone Loma hurler to come away unscathed. Steve Greenberg (1-0) picked up the win for CU. Greenberg started the game at DH but toed the rubber for two frames.
The Sea Lions host NAIA No. 23-ranked Madonna (Mich.) for three games starting with a 2:00 pm tilt Friday and wrapping up with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Crusaders lost twice on Thursday, falling to Oregon Tech 8-3 and Vanguard 3-0.
