SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene led in both contests but was swept by visiting Concordia in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium by scores of 3-2 and 11-4. The twin killing drops the Sea Lions to 11-16 overall, 4-10 GSAC while the Eagles improved to 17-6, 9-1 conference.
Loma fell behind early after Concordia scored a run in the top of the first inning of game one. The first batter of the game, Ty Holm blooped a double down the left field line and came home on a single from Ryan Scornaienchi.
Point Loma answered with a two-out rally in the home half of the inning. Ricky Gingras started the comeback with a single to right. Pinch-runner Daniel Hernandez stole second and scored on a single by leftfielder Bryan Burkhead who took second on the throw home.
Centerfielder Trey Hunt collected a RBI single, plating Burkhead, for Point Loma's second run.
However, though the Sea Lions would have nine more hits in the game, they would not score again off CUI starter Brent Clapper and two relievers.
Loma starter Justin Lawrence was up to the task against the second-ranked and defending national champion Eagles though. Concordia pushed across the tying run in the third, but Lawrence and Clapper frustrated the opposition from that point on, the two teams combining to strand 19 runners.
Tied 2-2 after nine, the game went into extra innings. The Eagles finally snapped the deadlock in the bottom of the tenth after Sea Lion reliever Chris Gonzales uncorked a two-out wild pitch that allowed Kyle Konicek to score from third.
Despite excellent outings, neither Lawrence nor Clapper was involved in the decision. Lawrence went 7.2 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on six hits. Clapper tossed 8.2 frames, giving up two runs on 11 hits.
Gonzales (1-2) suffered the loss for Point Loma after he surrendered one unearned run in an inning of relief. Garrett Gooding and Sam Sadler both toed the rubber for Point Loma and both came away unscathed.
Sean Buford (3-1) picked up the win with one shutout frame on the hill. Josh White threw one pitch, but that was enough for him to earn his fifth save of the season.
Gingras and Hunt had three hits apiece for the Sea Lions.
The Eagles struck first in the seven-inning nightcap but PLNU put together a four-run second inning to take an early 4-1 lead.
Hunt reached on an error to begin the scoring outburst. DH Tyler Nordgren, first baseman Andy Littlefield and third baseman JJ Reading each singled, the last two driving in runs. Right fielder Tyler Hanzawa plated Reading with a ground out and Gingras laced a RBI single to give PLNU a 4-1 advantage.
Concordia halved the deficit with a run in the third and then took control of the game with a six-run sixth. The Eagles added three insurance runs in the seventh.
Jack Archie started for the Sea Lions and lasted 5.1 frames, giving up four runs and striking out six batters.
AJ Epstein (0-1) was the losing pitcher, however. He faced one batter, who reached base and ended up scoring the go-ahead run. Nolan Stouder took over and gave up six runs, five earned, in just two-thirds of an inning of work.
Danny Romero went the distance for the Eagles. He survived a shaky second inning but settled down after that. In total he gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Dave Peterson went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Eagles which had 12 hits compared to eight from the Sea Lions.
The two teams will head up to Irvine for two nine-inning games on Friday. First pitch is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.
