PLNU Splits Twinbill at San Diego Christian

EL CAJON, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene and San Diego Christian split a GSAC doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Hawks won the opener 7-5 with the Sea Lions picking up a 13-4 triumph in the nightcap.

PLNU moved to 9-10 on the season with the road split and to 2-4 in conference play, while SDCC moves to 7-13 overall and to 2-4 in the GSAC.

Lucas Whitmore went the distance for San Diego Christian in game one despite yielding 11 hits. PLNU collected 14 hits in the second game led by a three-hit, four-RBI effort from centerfielder Trey Hunt

Whitmore improved to 2-2 after tossing nine innings against PLNU Friday. Justin Lawrence started for the Sea Lions but could not hold onto a 4-2 lead. The Hawks evened the game in the fourth and then scored the go-ahead run in the fifth off PLNU reliever Josh Dexheimer.

The Hawks pushed across two insurance runs in the eighth off Sam Sadler to make the score 7-4. The Sea Lions got a run closer but fell two short.

Sea Lion left fielder Bryan Burkhead had three hits including a double, a triple and a homerun. The other eight hits were spread around the lineup. Catcher Ricky Gingras doubled in two runs in PLNU's three-run third.

PLNU plated three runs in the fourth to break a 2-2 deadlock with the Hawks in game two. Gingras did some damage in the frame with another two-run double.

The Sea Lions pushed across another run in the fifth and then dropped three on the Hawks in the sixth and four more in the sixth to take the game out of reach. Hunt came through again with a three-run double in the seventh inning.

All but one starter had a hit in the nightcap. Gingras, Burkhead Tyler Hanzawa and Clinton Harwick had two hits apiece while Gingras and Burkhead each adding two RBI.

Loma starter Jack Archie (2-1) picked up the win with 5.2 innings of work. Archie allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out six. Garrett Gooding and Mike Scarmella relieved, and neither was scored upon.

These same two teams will conclude their four-game season series with two at PLNU's Carroll B. Land Stadium on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 10 am.
