SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene lost to Westmont 14-9 in a slugfest Friday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. The two teams combined for 31 hits in the Golden State Athletic Conference tilt, the polar opposite of Thursday's 2-1 pitching duel.
The Sea Lions slipped to 11-12 overall, 4-6 in conference with the loss while WC improved to 9-12, 4-6 GSAC.
The middle of the Warrior lineup was especially lethal Friday with the 2-5 batters going 12-for-19 and driving in nine runs. Westmont had eight extra-base hits compared to just one from the Sea Lions.
PLNU looked as though it would take control of the game early however, when the Green and Gold pushed three across in their first at-bat. Ricky Gingras singled in a run, and with Westmont pitcher Daniel Cabuling throwing the ball away, two more runners scored.
The Warriors responded with four in the home half of the first though, Timothy Leary plating two with a double.
Gingras smacked a two-run single in the top of the second as the Sea Lions reclaimed the lead. Point Loma then scored three more in the third to take an 8-4 advantage. Marcus Heisner drove in one and Tyler Hanzawa scored two more with a single.
Loma added one in the fourth but Westmont bookended that run with five of their own; Petrak hitting a bases-clearing triple in the third and Leary drilling a two-run homer in the next frame. Tied at 9-9, the Warriors scored three in the fifth, capped by a two-run double from Coby Cress. WC added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to leap past PLNU by five.
The Sea Lions threatened, but were unable to record another run against the WC bullpen over the final five innings.
PLNU collected 13 hits: Gingras, Trey Hunt, Lucas DiCiccio and Tyler Nordren with two hits apiece.
Westmont's Cress and JJ Turbin each went 4-for-5. Leary drove in five runs for the Warriors who pounded the PLNU staff for 18 hits.
Sea Lion starter Jack Archie lasted just 2.2 innings Friday. He allowed seven runs on eight hits before being chased from the hill but was not involved in the decision. Sam Sadler walked the only batter he faced with AJ Epstein, Chad Etchison, Dani Scharmann all toeing the rubber and all giving up runs.
Devin Matson (1-0) earned the win with two innings of work. Etchison (0-1) was hung with the loss after yielding three runs in two frames.
The two teams will make their way down to San Diego for a doubleheader at Carroll B. Land Stadium on Saturday. First-pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
