PHOENIX – The Sea Lion bats were silenced in a non-conference twinbill by Arizona Christian at Firestorm Field Thursday. Point Loma Nazarene was blanked in both games, losing the opener 1-0 (11) and the nightcap 2-0.
PLNU's two losses drop the team to 15-24 on the season while the second-year Firestorm improved to 25-17.
Green and Gold starters Justin Lawrence and Tyler Garkow both threw well Thursday but neither hurler was backed up offensively. The Sea Lions totaled just nine hits in the two contests.
Lawrence, game one's starter, allowed no runs and just four hits in his eight innings on the hill. Garrett Levsen took over in the ninth and held ACU in check until yielding a hit in the bottom of the 11th. Josh Dexheimer came in and gave up the game-winning base knock to Alex Glenn.
Alika Pruett tossed nine solid innings for the Firestorm but wasn't involved in the decision. Jack Sherman (2-1) was the winner after shutting PLNU out for two innings.
Garkow and his counterpart Josh Dreier mostly cruised through game two. It wasn't until the fourth inning that a team was able to push across a run, ACU scoring twice on three hits.
Those runs were enough for Dreier (6-3) who allowed just one more hit over the final three frames.
Garkow (3-7) suffered the loss. The righty gave up just five hits and two runs.
The Sea Lions take a few days off before making the short trip to Cal State San Marcos for another non-conference tilt next Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
