Sea Lions Take Down Wildcats, 4-1

PLNU nets women's soccer win

SAN DIEGO--Point Loma scored less than a minute into the match and tacked on three more scores from there on their way to a 4-1 non-conference women's soccer victory over Central Washington on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Amanda Mitchell notched a pair of spectacular goals to lead the Sea Lions, who improved to 2-1 on the season. Central Washington, an NCAA Division II school representing the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, dropped to 0-2-1.

The Green and Gold controlled the contest from the beginning. Less than a minute into the game, senior Brooke Winklepleck fired a shot from 25 yards out that soared into top of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Just 15 minutes later, junior Krista Gregory collected a loose ball in the Wildcat's box, set up by Claire Mathews' long entry pass, and sent it into the goal for a 2-0 advantage.

After halftime, the Sea Lions added to their total. In the 57th minute, Mitchell scored off an assist from Gregory to push the lead to 3-0.

With just under 20 minutes to play, the Wildcats responded with a goal from Kelsy Villegas. But in the 82nd minute, Mitchell took the ball into CWU's box, dribbled through a group of defenders and rifled the ball into the net to give PLNU a 4-1 lead.

The Sea Lions shot efficiently, finishing with eight of their 11 shots on goal. The Wildcats managed just five shots, with only one of them on goal.

Senior Tiffany Kracy and sophomore Lupe Herrera split time in goal for PLNU, who were still without several key players.

Coach Tim Hall's team will now get a long break from match action, next playing in the Bay area on Sept. 13 and 15 against Holy Names and Academy of Art. Those two matches will be PLNU's first-ever Pacific West Conference matches.
