Sea Lions fall at Grand Canyon

'Lopes pull away from Point Loma in the second half

[Box score]

SAN DIEGO - A strong defensive effort wasn't enough for Point Loma, who fell 55-40 on the road against Grand Canyon in a Pacific West Conference contest Saturday, Jan. 19.

The Sea Lions fell to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in the PacWest. GCU improved to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the PacWest.

Freshman Trevor Peterson sank back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the first half to give the Sea Lions an 18-14 lead. But the 'Lopes responded with a 9-0 run, and the Green and Gold never led again.

PLNU held the 'Lopes more than 15 points below their season average and forced 20 turnovers. Additionally, they held GCU to just 34 percent shooting. However, Grand Canyon absolutely dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Sea Lions 37-25.

The Sea Lions did not help their own cause, shooting just 34 percent from the field. They also made just 50 percent (8-16) from the free throw line while coughing up 23 turnovers of their own.

Killian Larson paced the 'Lopes with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs. Meanwhile, no Sea Lions reached double figures. Peterson led the team with eight points.

The Sea Lions will return to action Wednesday night, when they host Cal State Marcos, a former NAIA rival. On Dec. 5, the Sea Lions lost to the Cougars on the road 51-46. San Marcos enters Wednesday's contest at 16-4. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
