HILO, Hawaii -
Kelli LeClair had 18 kills and
Heather Leavitt added 14 to help the No. 25 Point Loma volleyball team shake off last night's loss and return to the win column with a 25-19, 25-21 and 25-17 sweep of Hawaii Hilo on Saturday.
The Sea Lions (18-4, 12-1 PacWest) concluded their Hawaii road trip at 2-1 and have regained sole possession of first place in the Pacific West Conference with their win and Cal Baptist's loss at BYU-Hawaii. The loss drops the Vulcans to 6-9 on the season and 1-9 in the PacWest.
Point Loma put together one of its most efficient hitting nights of the year to take down the Vulcans in straight sets. In the match the Sea Lions had just 12 errors and outhit UHH .340 to .133. The numbers don't tell the whole story however, as Point Loma lost its starting setter,
Savannah Wedemeyer, early in the first set.
Point Loma then turned to
Taylor Lane, who came into the match with 18 career assists, including zero this season, to initiate the offense. The junior from Tucson, Ariz. (Amphitheater HS) stepped right into the setter's role and doubled her career total with 36 assists in the match while adding five digs and a service ace.
"Taylor really stepped up and put up high balls for our hitters while playing great defense," said Point Loma head coach Sarah Gustin.
The rest of the match Lane was putting the ball in quality spots for the Sea Lions' hitters to take good swings. LeClair recorded her 18 kills with just three errors for a .375 hitting percentage.
Alyssa Dwyer added nine kills with a .417 hitting percentage, while
Cayleen Harty hit .556 with five kills and no errors.
"Our outsides played amazing," Gustin explained. "As a whole we came back from last night with a refreshed and competitive attitude. Everyone stepped up and adapted really well. I'm very happy with this win."
Point Loma was able to win the blocking battle 5.5 to 2.0. It also posted an incredible .581 hitting percentage in the first set with 19 kills and just one error.
The PLNU volleyball team will now step out of PacWest play for a non-conference match when it hosts San Diego Christian on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will then return to league play on Saturday (Oct. 26) at Azusa Pacific.
