NCCAA Championships start Monday for PLNU

NCCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The Point Loma women's soccer team is the No. 7 seed in the in the nine-team National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Championships in Kissimmee, Fla. (Dec. 2-7). The Sea Lions are in 'Pool C' along with No. 3 seed Grace College and No. 4 Judson. PLNU will open with the No. 3 seed Grace on Monday, Dec. 2 and then face Judson on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Both matches will kickoff at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

The Sea Lions will be attempting to be one of four teams to advance out of pool play. Teams will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie during pool play. The semifinals will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 and finals will be on Saturday, Dec. 7.

There are no live stats currently scheduled for these matches. The only way to observe will be through the video stream at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/tourbeau.portal. Matches are available on a pay-per-view basis or for a complete tournament package.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma earned its way to the NCCAA Championships by winning the West Regional with a 2-0 victory over Azusa Pacific. The Sea Lions are 11-7-1 on the season. They have won four of their last five matches, including the last three in a row via the shutout.

Freshman Dottie Rhoten leads the team with seven goals. Five of those seven goals have been game-winners for the Sea Lions. Natalie Swift is second on the squad with five goals and four steals. Claire Mathews is the team leader with five assists. Freshman goalie Ariel Oriarte has recorded shutouts in three of her four starts this season. She has allowed just two goals on the season and has eight saves.

Earlier in the week three Sea Lions were recognized on the PacWest all-conference team. Leah Porter and Claire Mathews were both named second team, while Jessica Van Loo picked up an honorable mention.

A LOOK AT GRACE COLLEGE:
Grace College is the No. 3 seed in the tournament and the top seed in 'Pool C.' It has posted a record of 11-6-2 and was the champion of the Mid-West Regional. Meredith Hollar leads the Lancers with 11 goals on the season. Holly Bennett has four goals and a team-leading six assists. Goal keeper Carmen Barnhill has six shutouts and is allowing 1.27 goals per game.

A LOOK AT JUDSON:
Judson received the No. 4 seed in the tournament. They were 12-6-2 on the regular season and earned their trip to the NCCAA Championships by receiving the first at-large bid. The Eagles are led by Angela Bianchi and her 23 goals. Jenna Steffensen is also a potent scoring threat with 17 goals on the season. Goal keeper Sara Hoffman has five shutouts on the season and is allowing 1.03 goals per game.
