SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's tennis team swept doubles and won five of six singles matches to dominate Western New Mexico, 8-1, on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
The win puts the Sea Lions at 2-5 on the season, while the Mustangs dropped to 4-5.
The match opened with the Sea Lions winning all three doubles matches.
Hope Penner and
Preethika Venugopal won at No. 1 doubles 8-4.
Kiersten Steinhauer and
Wileen Chiu then teamed up for a 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while
Maika Adair and
Kirsty Mountain won by the same score at No.3.
The match then moved to singles where PLNU won at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4-6. Chiu, Mountain and
Sharon Reibstein swept their opponents in the No. 4-6 positions with no Mustang even winning three games in any set.
Hope Penner defeated Ashley Newell at No. 2 singles 6-3 and 6-2.
Maika Adair had to battle Anya Tiurina in the No. 1 singles spot but came away with a 4-6, 7-5 and 10-7 victory.
PLNU's next match will be on the road at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, Mar. 1 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
