THIS WEEK: For the second straight week the Point Loma men's and women's track & field teams will have the opportunity to host a meet on their home track. This Saturday (Mar. 23) the Sea Lions will welcome in a number of teams for the first annual Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet. The meet will get underway at 9:00 a.m. with the men's hammer, women's javelin and the men's long jump. The track events will start at 11:35 p.m. with the women's 4x800m relay.
THE FIELD: In addition to the Sea Lions the field will feature student-athletes from UC San Diego, Cal State San Marcos, George Fox, Westmont, Vanguard, Middlebury, Vanguard and Allegheny.
THE FACILITY: The meet will be held on the campus of Point Loma. The all-weather track was installed in January of 1984, preceding the Olympic games in Los Angeles. Many Olympic athletes and world class runners from around the world have taken advantage of San Diego's weather and Point Loma's setting to train on this track. The track has been resurfaced over the years, including in 2008, rendering it one of the finest competitive facilities in Southern California. New bleachers were installed in 2006 which expanded the seating capacity considerably. 8 LANE POLYURETHENE TRACK. SPIKE SIZES FOR THE RUNNING EVENTS to ¼”, JAVELIN AND HIGH JUMP UP TO 3/8”, AND LONG/TRIPLE JUMPS, POLE VAULT UP TO ¼”.
FIELD EVENTS: 4 THROWS/JUMPS FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE. WE WILL ONLY MARK THE BEST THROW BY EACH COMPETITOR.
STARTING HEIGHTS: WOMEN'S POLE VAULT 2.08m (6'10”) AND MEN'S POLE VAULT 3.35m (10')INCREMENTS WILL BE INCREASE BY 15cm. HIGH JUMP WOMEN WILL OPEN AT 1.35m (4'5”) AND MEN WILL OPEN AT 1.66 m (5'5.25”) WITH THE INCREASE BEING BY 5cm INCREMENTS.
THE HAMMER THROW: The hammer event will be thrown on the lower field just west of the track which has been our practice area. It will create definite problems for throws longer than 200', as well as the east sector will run into the hillside and will require additional throws if it is in the sector and outside of the west sector will drop down the hill. I want all throwers and throws coaches to know that this is not going to be ideal but the other option this year was to not throw the hammer.

TEAM CAMP AREAS: OUTSIDE THE FENCE ON THE WEST END IN THE GRASS AREA. I DON'T WANT ANY TEAMS COLLECTING IN THE INFIELD! PLEASE KEEP ALL ATHLETES AND COACHES OUT OF THE FLAGGED OFF AREA BETWEEN THE TRACK AND THE INFIELD ON THE SOUTHSIDE OF THE TRACK (THE STRAIGHTAWAY SIDE FOR THE SPRINTS AND HURDLES.)
RUNNING RESULTS: RUNNING EVENTS WILL BE PYRO-BRIGHT TIMED (FULLY ELECTRONIC). All field events will be measure in the metric system.
DRESSING FACILITIES: AVAILABLE ON THE CAMPUS IN THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S LOCKERROOMS ADJACENT TO THE GYM. YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN TOWELS AND THERE ARE NO LOCKERS AVAILABLE.
TRAINERS: OUR TRAINING ROOM WILL BE FULLY STAFFED; HOWEVER WE DO REQUEST THAT YOU BRING YOUR OWN TRAINERS WITH YOU IF AT ALL POSSIBLE and PLEASE BRING YOUR NEEDED SUPPLIES. FEES: SATURDAY'S COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL INCLUDING THE FRIDAY HAMMER EVENT: $15 PER ATHLETE OR $200 PER GENDER PER TEAM. Thus, men's team of 14 or more athletes will be capped @ $200 and women's team of 14 or more athletes will be also capped @ $200. Schools with men and women's combined teams Discounted at $375. Please make checks payable to POINT LOMA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY.
SCORING: Entries per school not limited with the exception of the 800 meters(only 2 individual entries per school) we are running a 4 x 800 relay which can accommodate 4 additional 800 runners. Only 2 individuals from each school are eligible to score and one relay per school.
FACILITY: The timing area is located on the outside of the track (THIS AREA WILL BE OFF LIMITS TO ALL ATHLETES AND COACHES)! All requests should come through me and I will deal with the timing officials for you. We will also have the South side of the infield of the track flagged off to keep athletes, spectators and coaches away from the finish line and the track. ENTRANCES TO THE TRACK WILL ONLY TAKE PLACE THROUGH THE GATES AT THE SOUTHWEST CORNER AND THE WALK GATE AT THE CORNER OF THE TENNIS COURTS AND BASEBALL FIELD (NORTHEAST CORNER). I ask that you please convey this information to your coaching staff, athletes and spectators your assistance in this area is greatly appreciated.
