Sea Lions continue road swing in Phoenix

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

The Pacific West Conference road swing will continue for the Point Loma baseball team this weekend as it goes to Grand Canyon for a four-game series starting on Thursday, Mar. 7. The teams will open with a single nine inning game on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., and then face off in doubleheader on Friday starting at 3:00 p.m. The series will conclude with another single nine inning game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. All times are listed in Pacific Standard Time.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
PLNU is coming off a four-game series split on the road at Dixie State. The Sea Lions are now 7-8 on the season and 5-3 in the PacWest. Mike Marcoux leads the team with a .405 batting average. He came through with a two-run triple in the top of the seventh in the series finale against Dixie State to lift the Sea Lions to a 3-2 win. Zach Allen leads the team with 11 runs scored and nine runs batted in.

The pitching staff is led by senior starters Justin Lawrence and Tyler Garkow. Garkow is 3-1 on the season with a 1.91 ERA and two complete games. Lawrence is 2-1 on the season with 23 strikeouts in 24 innings, and opponents are hitting just .195 off him.

As a team, PLNU leads the PacWest with 35 stolen bases and a .976 team fielding percentage. The Sea Lions rank fourth in the league in both team batting average (.277) and fifth in team ERA (4.46).

A LOOK AT GRAND CANYON:
Grand Canyon is 9-4 on the season and 4-0 in the PacWest after sweeping Academy of Art at home. The 'Lopes feature four players in their order hitting over .400 with Steven Swingle (.429), Steh Fretheim (.417), Garrett Jeffries (.414) and Nick Chapman (.400). Derek Mendoza leads the squad in RBIs with 15. As a team, GCU ranks second in the PacWest with a 3.27 team earned run average and third with a .312 team batting average.

Following the series the Point Loma baseball team will return home to host Azusa Pacific in a four-game series starting on Mar. 15.
