SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's tennis team swept singles and doubles from Pacific West Conference foe Hawaii Hilo to earn a 9-0 victory on Thursday (Mar. 7).
PLNU is now 4-7 on the season and 1-2 against PacWest foes.
The Sea Lions took all six singles matches in straight sets.
Preethika Venugopal did not drop a game en route to the 6-0 and 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.
The best match of the afternoon came at No. 1 singles where
Maika Adair squared off with the Vulcans' Emelie Laussen. Adair captured the first set 6-3 but found herself trailing 5-4 in the second set. Adair battled to win the next game and tie the match at 5-5. She then broke Laussen's serve and held her own to win the set 7-5 and take the match in straight sets.
In doubles,
Wileen Chiu and
Kiersten Steinhauer took care of business 8-0 at No. 3 and
Hope Penner and Venugopal won at No. 1, 8-5. Adair and
Sharon Reibstein were able to preserve the sweep for PLNU with a 9-8 win at No. 2.
The Sea Lions women's tennis team will have another doubleheader this coming Saturday. They will host Fresno Pacific at 11:00 a.m., and then turn around and face Hope International at 3:00 p.m. PLNU will also complete their unfinished match against HIU on Saturday. The match was started Feb. 18 in Fullerton but was suspended due to darkness. The teams still need to complete No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles. PLNU currently leads in the match 4-2.
