PLNU drops doubleheader and series to GCU

[Game 1 box score] [Game 2 box score]

PHOENIX - The Point Loma baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Grand Canyon on Saturday (Mar. 9), falling 3-1 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap.

The losses even the Sea Lions' Pacific West Conference record at 6-6 on the season, as they dropped to 8-11 on the season. GCU, which won the last three games of the series, is now 12-5 on the year and 7-1 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Grand Canyon scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fifth, and Coley Bruns and Mark Jarrett combined to hold the Sea Lions to four hits in a 3-1 win in the opener.

Bruns went the first six innings giving up just one unearned run and four hits while striking out four to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jarrett tossed a scoreless seventh for his second save.

Justin Lawrence (2-2) kept PLNU in the contest as he allowed six hits and three runs over six innings while striking out seven.

The first run for GCU scored on a unique play when the Sea Lions' right fielder dropped a shallow fly ball with the bases loaded, that the umpires had ruled an infield fly, allowing the runner from third to score. Grand Canyon would plate one more in the inning on Derek Mendoza's double.

Zach Allen drove in the Sea Lions' only run in the third inning when he doubled in Mike Marcoux. That gave PLNU the early 1-0 lead.

Game 2
The 'Lopes scored eight runs in the fifth to close out the series with a 10-0 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Harlyn Griffiths and Brian Kraft each had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the 'Lopes. Derek Mendoza and Kyle Raidy added two runs scored apiece.

Trent Wilson (2-1) started and pitched the first 4.2 innings for GCU. He gave up just four hits and no runs to earn the win.

Next games
Point Loma will now return home to host Azusa Pacific in a four-game series starting on Mar. 15 at noon.
