Sea Lions steamroll SDC Hawks in three

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - After featuring the outside hitters all last weekend it was middle blockers mcKensey Wise and Alyssa Dwyer turn to lead the Point Loma volleyball team to a three-set sweep (25-14, 25-20, 25-21) over San Diego Christian on the road Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The junior middle blockers combined to hammer down 20 kills and hit .680 to lead PLNU to their fifth straight victory to open the season. Dwyer had a team-leading 14 kills on just 19 attempts to post a .579 hitting mark. Wise lead the team with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage as she finished each of her six swings.

"We really clicked on the slide tonight," said PLNU head coach Sarah Gustin. "The middle blockers carried us and it was a good change of pace. We need that as a weapon to be a more effective offense."

Feeding those middle blockers the ball was setter Savannah Wedemeyer who dished out a 39 assists, a season-best for the sophomore in a three-set match. Delaney McCraney also added 12 kills from her opposite side hitter position to balance the Sea Lions' attack.

"This gives us nice momentum going into the weekend against two top 25 teams and two other very tough (regional) opponents," said Gustin. "I was happy that we could finish in three sets."

The Sea Lions will now take place in the UCSD Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14. PLNU will open with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 2:30 p.m., and then play the tourney host, No. 13 UC San Diego, that evening at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday Point Loma will face No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino at Noon and Cal Poly Pomona at 5:00 p.m.

"This tournament will be a great test for us heading into conference," added Gustin.
