Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Point Loma opened PacWest Conference play Thursday with a 1-1 tie on the road against Dominican University.
Natalie Swift scored her third goal of the season off an assist from
Dottie Rhoten, and the Sea Lions moved their record to 1-3-1 (0-0-1 PacWest). The Penguins moved to 2-2-2 (0-0-1 PacWest).
Dominican outshot the Sea Lions 20-12, though eight of PLNU's 12 shots were on goal, an excellent percentage.
Sophomore
Lupe Herrera played a phenomenal game in goal for the Sea Lions, saving 10 shots on the day. Her counterpart Megan Herring, the PacWest Player of the Week, stopped seven shots.
The game was scoreless until the 32nd minute. Dominican's Stephanie Pawek fired a shot off the crossbar and knocked the rebound back toward the goal. Herrera made a save, but Pawek sent the ensuing deflection into the net to put the Penguins up 1-0.
But it wouldn't take long for the Sea Lions to respond. In the 36th minute, Rhoten had the ball near the goal, and Herring came out to challenge. Then the freshman passed the ball across to Swift, who tied the game at 1-1.
That would be the final goal of the game as the teams continued to battle for another 84 minutes.
The game was reminiscent of the last meeting between the two teams, a scoreless draw in both squads' PacWest finale in 2012. Thursday's contest was a very physical affair in which the teams combined for 14 fouls, although no cards were given.
The Sea Lions will continue their Bay Area road trip Saturday when they take on Notre Dame de Namur. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
