Baseball drops opening doubleheader to CPP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN DIEGO - Cal Poly Pomona's JJ Franklin earned saves in both games of the season-opening doubleheader as the Broncos took game one from the Point Loma baseball team, 5-4, and game two, 4-3, on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Game 1
Chris Carlson and Steven Andrade each drove in two runs and the Broncos' bullpen held PLNU scoreless over the final four innings to earn a 5-4 win in the season opener for each team.

PLNU built a 3-2 lead after two innings after Jack Spohn and Clinton Harwick each knocked in runs during the second frame. CPP tied up the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Andrade. The Broncos then took the lead in the fifth on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Carlson to go up 5-3.

A home run by Lucas DiCiccio in the bottom of the ninth would pull Point Loma back within one (5-4) but that would be the Sea Lions' only hit against the Broncos' bullpen.

Garret Levsen took the loss for Point Loma. He allowed seven hits and five runs in five innings. Max Bethell picked up the win for CPP as he worked five innings allowing five hits and three runs. JJ Franklin surrendered the solo home run to DiCiccio but still earned the save in the season opener.

Garrett Gooding was a highlight performer for the Sea Lions. He took over for Levsen after the fifth inning and pitched the final four frames allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out four.

Game 2
Cal Poly Pomona scored four unearned in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and stun the Sea Lions, 4-3, in the second game of the doubleheader.

PLNU's freshman starting pitcher Kellen Sheppard went the first 7.1 innings allowing just four hits and four runs, all of which were unearned. He retired the first 15 batters of his collegiate career in order until CPP broke up the perfect game with a leadoff single in the sixth.

Sheppard when back to the mound for the eighth inning but that is went things fell apart for the Sea Lions. They committed two errors, gave up a double steal and three hits in the innings as the Broncos used the four unearned runs to turn a three-run deficit into a one-run lead (4-3).

CPP then went right back to its bullpen as they repeated their pattern in the first game by using Andy Amaro in the eighth and Franklin to close out the game in the ninth.

PLNU had the lead thanks to a three-run first inning. The first four batters of the game had hits for the Sea Lions including Anthony Torres who doubled in two runs with a double to left center field and was then driven home when the next batter Tyler Nordgren doubled. These would be the only four hits of the game for Point Loma.

Jake Menzhuber earned the win out of the bullpen for CPP. He took over for starter Steven Farnsworth in the sixth inning and pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings.
