SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions put together their best day of baseball to date in the 2014 season as they swept a doubleheader from La Sierra, winning game one 9-4 and game two 10-0 behind
Garrett Gooding's first career shutout, on Friday, Feb. 21.
This was the fifth win for Point Loma in its last six games as the Sea Lions improved to 5-6 on the season. The pair of losses dropped La Sierra to 1-11.
Game 1
PLNU batted around and scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 9-4 win in the doubleheader opener.
Trey Hunt and
Ryan Garcia each drove in two runs while
Clinton Harwick went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Garcia also scored twice in the contest.
PLNU jumped on LSU's starter Logan Duran with five hits and seven runs in the first inning. Harwick led off the game with a hit by pitch and came into score on Garcia's single to centerfield. Hunt would deliver the big hit of the inning as he singled in two runs with one out.
Point Loma starter
Garret Levsen threw a solid game to earn his first win of the season. He pitched the first six innings allowing seven hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out three. In the seventh inning, Levsen gave way to
Noah Huggins who pitched the final three innings while allowing just one hit to earn his first career save.
Logan Duran took the loss for the Golden Eagles with three hits and six earned runs allowed in just 0.1 innings pitched.
Game 2
Garrett Gooding turned in the dominant performance on the mound the Sea Lions had been looking for all season as he threw a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Gooding gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out seven in a complete game effort. He set the first 10 batters of the game down in order, and even that runner was quickly erased off the bases as Gooding enticed the next batter into a groundball double play.
His offense was also very productive today as the Sea Lions posted a season-best 10 runs. They scored four in the first innings as they sent eight men to the plate and had five hits and three stolen bases.
Tyler Nordgren and
AJ Derr each had RBI-hits in the frame.
The Sea Lions would also put up three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth it was Hunt and Harwick who each came through with run-scoring hits and in the sixth Garcia knocked in a run and then scored on error.
Lucas DiCiccio and
Tyler Hanzawa were each credited with two runs scored. DiCiccio was also 3-for-3 while getting the start in right field while
AJ Derr had two hits as the starting catcher.
Scott Makorow took the loss for LSU as he allowed eight hits and seven runs in three innings of work. Matt Valenzuela had two of the Golden Eagles' three hits as the Sea Lions outhit them 10-3 in game two.
