Box Score
MONTEREY, Calif. - The Point Loma baseball team can just not break through for its first win of 2014 as they lost their fourth straight one-run game to start the season, this time falling 5-4 to Cal State Monterey Bay in 10 innings on Friday, Feb. 7.
The Otters would benefit from a pair of costly PLNU errors late in the game as both the tying and game-winning runs were unearned. First CSUMB tied up the game in the eighth after PLNU looked to be getting out of the inning unscathed after giving up a pair of leadoff walks.
Brett Carlile was able to induce the groundball double play with no outs but then with two outs and a runner at third PLNU booted a ball allowing the tying run to score.
The game-winning run would also occur on a pair of Sea Lions' miscues. After giving up a leadoff walk and then getting a fly out, Carlilie once again induced a groundball but this one snuck under the glove of the second baseman for an error. But the play did not stop there as CSUMB's runner was able to take third on the error by the second baseman and then come all the way in to score as the ball was mishandled in the outfield by the Sea Lions.
Carlile (0-2) was the tough-luck losing pitcher for PLNU after he was charged with two unearned runs, while allowing just one hit, in 2.2 innings pitched. The Sea Lions got a strong performance out of starter
Garret Levsen who pitched the first 6.2 innings allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four.
Kory Groves earned the win for the Otters (2-3) as he pitched the final two innings allowing just three hits and no runs.
Trey Hunt and
Ryan Garcia each had three hits for PLNU which outhit CSUMB in the game 14-7. Garcia posted an RBI and a double in the game, both firsts in his collegiate career.
Kellen Sheppard also had his first two career hits and
Joseph Keller was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Andres Coll had two hits and an RBI for Cal State Monterey Bay. He was the only Otter to record a multi-hit game.
These teams will continue their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m.Â
