Sea Lions take series from Azusa Pacific

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO - Azusa Pacific will probably think twice about pitching to Tyler Nordgren with runners on base in the future. The Sea Lions' senior third basemen was a terror throughout the four-game series including driving in all three runs in the series finale to lead PLNU to a 3-1 win after PLNU dropped the earlier game 6-4.

The win gives Point Loma (17-14, 9-7 PacWest) the series victory as it took three of the four games from the Cougars. It also kept it within two games of Azusa Pacific (18-10, 11-5 PacWest) for second place in the Pacific West Standings. Both teams are chasing Dixie State which leads the league by 3.5 games with a 15-2 conference record.

Nordgren was a force throughout the series as he went 7-for-15. He drove in seven runs in the four games and all three in wins in games two and four. He had seven of the Sea Lions' 12 RBI in the series, including the two-run walkoff homer in the second game of the series.

Game 1
Azusa Pacific put up runs in the third, four and fifth inning to build a 6-0 lead and then held off multiple PLNU rallies to earn the 6-4 victory.

Daniel Martin and Joe Huthsing each drove in two runs on two hits in the win. Mitch Dergazarian was 4-for-5 with a run scored.

The Cougars' starting pitcher, Joel Belk (3-1), went 6.2 innings allowing nine hits and three runs to earn the victory.

After falling behind 6-0 PLNU did not give up and kept the pressure on APU till the end. The Sea Lions scored one in the fifth on a Tyler Hanzawa single and two more in the seventh to cut the Cougars' lead in in half (6-3).

In the eighth Point Loma got one more when Mike Marcoux scored on a wild pitch and in the ninth it put its leadoff batter on base but APU's closer Mike Fairchild was able to work around the leadoff walk to earn the save.

Matt Jervis, Ryan Garcia and Hanzawa each had two hits for PLNU, while Garcia and Trey Hunt each knocked in a run. Garrett Gooding (1-4) took the loss after being charged with six hits, four walks and four runs in four innings pitched.

Game 2
Tyler Nordgren made APU pay by not walking him with two runners in scoring position in the fourth inning as Nordgren came through with a two-out, two-run single which put Point Loma in front for good at 3-2.

Azusa Pacific had elected to take the bat out of Nordgren's hand in the exact same scenario in the second inning by intentionally walking the senior third basemen, and it worked as Ryan Garcia grounded out to end the second inning. But in the fourth it was a whole other story.

Michael Randel led off the inning with a single and after he was sacrificed to second base, Clinton Harwick walked and then Matt Jervis grounded out to second base to put two runners in scoring position with two out for Nordgren. He fell behind in the count 0-2 but then singled right up the middle to score both runners.

Nordgren also knocked in the Sea Lions' first run of the game in the first inning as he singled in Harwick from second.

That would be all senior starter Garret Levsen would need as he pitched his second complete game of the season to improve to 4-1 on the year. He allowed just four hits and one run while striking out two in his seven innings of work.

Point Loma will be at home again on Tuesday, Apr. 1 to host San Diego Christian. The teams will continue their game from Feb. 11 which was suspended due to darkness at 2:00 p.m. and then play their regularly scheduled contest after.
