Baseball completes series sweep of Holy Names

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma baseball team took both games of Tuesday's doubleheader to sweep the four-game series from Holy Names in the opening Pacific West Conference series for both teams. PLNU won game one 6-5 and game two 3-2.

The Sea Lions have now won eight straight games and 11 of their last 12. Point Loma (11-6) now sits atop the Pacific West Conference standings at 4-0, after it was the only team to sweep its opening conference series.

Game 1
Tanner Handa's chopper with one out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning could not have been placed in a better spot as it allowed Preston Sands to scamper home on the crack of the bat with the winning run in a Sea Lions' 6-5 victory.

Joseph Keller was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. His three-run blast in the fifth inning fueled a four-run rally by the Sea Lions which put them on top 4-1. But Holy Names fought back with four runs of their own in the sixth before PLNU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Trey Hunt's grounder.

The game would remain tied at 5-5 into the bottom of the ninth. Sands led off the inning by being hit with a pitch. He promptly stole second base and then reached third on a wild pitch. HNU elected to walk the bases full to set up the double play with one out but Handa ruined that strategy with a high chopper to the shortstop where he could only get the runner at third, allowing Sands to come home with the winning run.

Brett Carlile (2-2) earned the victory in relief for the Sea Lions after throwing 1.1 perfect innings while striking out one. He came into the game with HNU threatening with two runners on but was able to induce a grounder to shortstop to end the threat. Brian Glynn took the loss for HNU after he allowed Sands to reach base to start the inning.

Game 2
Garret Levsen (2-1) pitched a complete game allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five to lead PLNU to a 3-2 victory in the finale and complete the series sweep for the Sea Lions.

Levsen had the opportunity to pitch with the lead nearly the whole game as the PLNU hitter put up two runs in the second inning on back-to-back RBI-singles by Trey Hunt and Anthony Torres.

After HNU cut the Sea Lions' lead in half with a run in the fifth inning, PLNU answered back with an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Nordgren to go back up 3-1. Holy Names would score one more in the sixth but Levsen was able to squash the damage by getting a strike'em out-throw'em out double play to end the inning.

Torres led Point Loma with two hits at the plate. Jacob Westhrope also paced Holy Names with two hits.

Next games
Point Loma will now head to Hawaii to play both Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific in four-game series starting on Monday, Mar. 10.
