Levsen delivers shutout in series finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Garret Levsen gave the Point Loma baseball team the performance it was looking for as the senior right-hander hurled his first career shutout to lift PLNU to a 7-0 win in the series finale against California Baptist on Saturday (Apr. 19).

Levsen's went all seven innings allowing five hits, one walk and no runs, while striking out three, to snap PLNU six-game losing skid (20-21, 11-13 PacWest). The Sea Lions' streak got to six after they dropped the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, 11-2.

CBU is now 31-11 on the season and is tied for third in the PacWest standings with Fresno Pacific at 14-10.

Game 1
California Baptist scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open the game and go onto an 11-2 win in the opener.

PLNU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI-singles by Kellen Sheppard and Matt Jervis. CBU cut that lead in half with a run in the second. The Lancers would then put up two runs in the third on an RBI-groundout and a sacrifice fly to take their first lead at 3-2.

CBU broke the game open in the fifth as the first six batters of the inning reached and before PLNU knew it the Lancers had six runs on the board. Antonio Chavarria knocked in two of his three runs in the inning, while Andy Crowley also drove in two in the fifth.

The Lancers' starter Adam Hofacket (6-2) would run with the lead as he went 8.1 innings allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out two.

Game 2
Levsen delivered the best start of his career with a seven-inning shutout to help Point Loma avoid the series sweep with a 7-0 win in the nightcap. He allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out three.

Levsen was under pressure for most of the game as he was pitching with a 1-0 lead for the first five innings. PLNU put up the first run of the game in the second on a throwing error by the CBU catcher on a stolen base by AJ Derr which allowed Trey Hunt to score from third on the error.

The Sea Lions would tack on two insurance runs in the sixth when Matt Jervis walked with the bases loaded and then PLNU grounded into a double play which allowed Tyler Nordgren to score from third.

In the seventh inning Point Loma broke the game open with four runs, three of which came on Lancer errors. The run scoring hit came from Marcus Heisner to get the Sea Lions started in the inning.

Levsen would then set the Lancers down in order in the bottom of the seventh to complete the shutout and give Point Loma the victory.
